More photos of Google's rumored Nexus 5 smartphone running Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) have popped up on the web. This is the second major appearance of the supposed Nexus 5, which many believe first showed itself in some FCC filings earlier this month. In both cases, identifying markings have been covered up, but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well, you know, it's probably not a platypus.

The timing of the latest leak coincides with the Nexus 4's disappearing act. Two weeks ago, Google ran out of 8GB Nexus 4 inventory in the U.S. following a $100 price cut, and at the time, you could still order the 16GB model for $249. Well, not anymore. The 16GB Nexus 4 is now sold out as well, and like the 8GB version, the likelihood of it coming back to Google Play is somewhere between slim to none. We're not ruling out the possibility of a return entirely -- both product pages encourage users to "Please check back soon" -- we just don't think it's very likely.

Google's $100 price cut seemed to suggest it was more interested in clearing out existing models than it is in continuing to sell the device. That would make sense if the Nexus 5 is indeed close to release.

One thing that's interesting about the Nexus 5 photos popping up in cyberspace is that it appears LG is once again manufacturing Google's smartphone, even though LG previously stated it was abandoning the Nexus ship. Other than that, there's not a ton to extract from the leaked photos. We can see a large camera on the backside, and there doesn't appear to be any physical buttons on the front. Otherwise, we'll have to wait and see what Google and LG are cooking up.
