There's been so much hype, speculation, and rumors in regards to the next iPad mini release featuring a Retina-class display that if Apple doesn't include one, there's probably going to be a pretty big backlash, especially in the media. Fortunately for Apple, it's an easy situation to avoid, and according to NPD DisplaySearch, mass production of iPad mini devices with an upgraded Retina display are about to begin.

"We should see the start of mass production of panels in June or July," Richard Shim, an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch, told CNET.

Shim added that LG Display will be one of the major suppliers of Retina-class panels for the iPad mini, and that Apple's rival Samsung is in no way supplying any parts for the next generation tablet. Other un-named companies will also help in supplying display parts.

As for the specs, the second generation iPad mini will retain its 7.9-inch display size, but with an upgraded 2048x1536 screen resolution, giving it about the same pixels per inch (PPI) density as the iPhone 5, Shim says. Shim also wonders if such a high-end resolution is wasted in a 7.9 panel, as he believes it will be difficult to discern extra pixels when going past 300 PPI.

while that might be true its a good marketing technique. People love the silly word retina display. But seriously apple should have at least made it 720p from the beginning.

I'm actually fairly excited for the announcement of the new Mini. If the processor and screen are upgraded, I might invest in one.
