A cool grand for what amounts to a Windows laptop with detachable keyboard? No, thank you. I get better performance and less malware vulnerability from my $200 Android tablet.
Agreed, though I challenge you to find an Android tab with a 128GB SSD, and not an mSATA stick that performs at less than half the performance of a good high density mobile SSD. We'll have to see how it performs but regardless, it's definitely way over-priced if that's where these tabs shake out.

I'd like to see you join a domain with your 200 dollar android tablet. For businesses it will be great as you can deploy any software you can throw at it with active directory. There is allot more to this PC than home use.
I can't see it for myself. I think, "$1,000 bucks" and I start thinking about how much of a PC I can build with it. Or what improvements I can make to one of the ones I have now.
Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.

$999 is a reasonable price for this hardware and form factor. Smaller form factor than a MacBook Air, 10-point multi-touch, Core i5 powered and a 128GB SSD, plus it's a convertible.

I have to agree with Marco C, its a PC with touch screen, sure you could build a PC for cheaper but that PC isnt going anywhere is it.
RTietjens please link us this Android you speak of.
an android device isn't a computer, obviously it won't be at the same price point.
If you try to build a laptop with the same spec, don't forget the touchscreen, higher than standard ppi at 1920x1080, digitalizer pen, etc, it's gonna come out higher than $1000 for sure, those are the features that will cost you. For a barebone laptop or desktop though, ya you can match the spec with much less than $1000, though that kind of defeats the purpose of the Surface Pro.
For the same $1000 why not get a 1080p 1920x1080 display and a 128GB SSD like on the Acer W700..
The benchmark reviews are looking very good on the pro. Very impressive, fastest tablet by far.
