Mozilla's upcoming phone OS, Firefox OS, has seemingly matured a lot these past six months, and with today's announcement of developer phones soon to be available, its final release can't be too far off. Developed by Geeksphone, the "Keon" and "Peak" models are designed to allow developers to dive head-first into getting their apps ready for the platform - with Mozilla itself focusing heavily on HTML-based ones.

The Keon model features a Snapdragon S1 SoC at 1GHz, a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 3 megapixel camera (back), a 4GB ROM and 512MB of RAM, microSD, light and proximity sensor, a g-sensor and 1580mAh battery. The Peak, by contrast, boosts the display to 4.3-inch qHD IPS, the SoC to an S4 1.2GHz, an 8 megapixel camera at the back (with flash) and 2 megapixel at the front and also a larger battery, at 1800 mAh. Both phones share identical wireless specs.

Overall, these specs are pretty-well on par with what many people expected to see. Firefox OS was never meant to compete on the high-end of the smartphone spectrum, so what we see here really is quite good. It's going to be interesting to see how developers take advantage of the hardware they're given.

So, pricing? You didn't really expect that, did you? That will come shortly, as the phones are set to release in early February through Geeksphone. Not a developer but are interested in giving Firefox OS a quick test? Don't forget about the simulator!

Wow, a new entry into the phone wars, and they don't even have square-ish icons. I guess Apple with have to dig a little deeper to find something "infringe" worthy ;)
