Replacing a cracked smartphone screen is a time-consuming, miserable process that involves way too many microscopic screws. Corning, which makes the glass found in many smartphones and tablets, announced Gorilla Glass 3, the latest version of its tough glass composition.

Gorilla Glass 3 is going to be tougher than version 2, of course, and Corning will be showing just how much tougher it is at the Consumer Electronics Show 2013, which kicks off next week. The company will also be touting the use of Gorilla Glass in larger display. Corning plans to show off new optical cables at CES 2013, as well. The fiber-based “Optical Cables by Corning,” will provide faster device-to-device connections than copper-based cables. Details on both of these new products are slim ahead of the official CES announcements.

As we know, Thunderbolt was originally conceived as using optical cables, but then went over to copper ; it will be interesting to see what Corning will be presenting at CES, not least when it comes to the question of power as distinct from signal transfer....
