Do you think Apple users may have missed Google Maps after the Cupertino company unwisely kicked the native app to the curb? You better believe it. The proof is in the numbers, and according to Google's Jeff Huber (Senior Vice President, Geo and commerce), Google Maps was downloaded more than 10 million times in 2 days after returning to iTunes.

"We're excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years," Huber stated in his Google+ post announcing the number of downloads.

Google Maps

Apple was heavily criticized for booting Google Maps from iOS 6 in favor of its own mapping software, a decision that was made even more unpopular when Apple Maps began doling out incorrect location information. At one point, Australian police even warned motorists against using Apple Maps because its inaccuracies led some motorists to a semi-arid national park where temperatures routinely reach 115F, leaving them stranded with no water supply. That was after Apple CEO Tim Cook had already apologized for the whole Maps fiasco.

Needless to say, it appears Apple users are thrilled to have Google Maps back on their iPhones.

And maybe this will help open the eyes of Apple and iPhone users, that Apple isn't always "the best" when it comes to technology like most people assume.

Have you guys checked out the new app yet?  It puts the old google maps app to shame, and looks really clean.

Yep, been using it since its release. It's obviously better than Apple's, but I like it even more than the free Mapquest app I'd been using.

I keep opening it up and playing with it.  One thing I was slightly disappointed in was when you search for a location, you can swipe up and see street view.  When I first read the pop up message, I thought it was saying you could see things around that location.  I was thinking it would display restaurants and hotels or something I could configure.  Unfortunately no, just street view... oh well, I'll just have to take 3 seconds to search for "food".
