Apparently Apple isn't the only one that's capable of attracting a crowd for a new device. Remember the Nexus 4 smartphone Google announced a couple of weeks ago? It went on sale yesterday, and if you hesitated, you missed out. According to various Internet time keepers, the device sold out in the U.S. in under 50 minutes, and even faster in other territories.

It took just half an hour for Google Play to deplete its stock in the U.K., and in Germany, the Nexus 4 sold out in 15 minutes. That's what you call a successful launch.

Nexus 4

Of course, we have no idea how many Nexus 4 devices Google made available at launch, so perhaps all this isn't as impressive as it seems. There have also been reports that if you mash the refresh button, Google Play may change its mind and decide that the Nexus 4 is, in fact, in stock. Either that's a glitch, or Google is slowly adding more inventory as it becomes available.

The LG-built Nexus 4 is Google's newest smartphone that sells for $299 for the 8GB model and $349 for 16GB. Part of the reason why it's so popular is because those are contract-free prices. The other reason is because the Nexus 4 is one of just a handful of devices delivering an unmolested Android experience, at least without rooting and installing a third-party ROM.

I was one of the refresh button mashers... and I was able to order an 8GB Nexus 4 :-D

I badly needed a new phone and even if it's not as awesome as I'm hoping, it will still be an improvement over the crap phone I currently have (T-mobile Prism)
