awesome! I'm suprised intel hasnt done this sooner!
The thing has always been there processors energy usage being to high we will see what this one does when some reviews get swinging.
And the battery type doesnt look promising at all
Anandtech already did a review on Medfield Z2460 when it was first introduced, the original basically was able to hold its own against most dual core Cortex A9 ARM devices of up to 1.2GHz. Along with similar power efficiency ranges.
Though some advantages, like the inclusion of hardware encoding helps it stand out a bit.
This version may be a little improved since then because the original was basically a single core 1.3GHz, with Hyper-Threading, that was given a Burst Mode (similar to Core i-Series Turbo Boost) of 1.6GHz, with GMA based on PowerVR SGX 540 GPU at 400MHz. Yields on the chip production proved better than expected though. So Intel may have raised that Burst Mode to 2GHz, as indicated they would a few months agao.
While ICS update should provide a similar improvements as it has for ARM devices. Google did a good job of optimizing Android for Intel. Though not all apps will not necessarily run perfectly and the version running on ARM is still about around 8%-10% better optimized.
The main problem is the next gen ARM chips coming out now and later will clearly eclipse this performance range. However, Intel will be releasing Z2580 and the Z2000 updates next year.
The Z2580 will basically be the dual core version of the present Medfield. Operating at the same base clock speed of 1.3GHz and Burst Mode of 1.8GHz, with GMA based on the PowerVR SGX 544MP2 (MP2 means dual GPU, and adds support for Direct3D 9.3) GPU running at 533MHz. So should provide a nice bump in both graphical and CPU performance. Along with being coupled with the Intel XMM7160 LTE with upgrades on the modem interface side to cope with the increased bandwidth.
While the Z2000 covers the very low end to cover the more basic phone types. Basically 1GHz, no Burst Mode, GMA based on PowerVR SGX 540 at 320MHz.
So basically by Q2 next year Intel should have products for the low, mid, and semi high end device ranges. Though it may be another year or two before Intel can push ahead to top end in the mobile device market.
How does the battery not look promising? 1650 mAh isn't bad. Compare it to an iphone4 at 1420 and iPhone4s at 1432 mAh respectfully and both offer great battery lives. If this phone performs below that of a 4s it should get better battery life...
It seems that «innovation» in the smartphone field is coming from other quarters than Cupertino. Anyone surprised ? But I do note a suspicious rounding of the corners....
