AuthenTec makes products for “secure networking, content and data protection, access control, and strong fingerprint security on PCs and mobile devices” (so sayeth the company website), and soon all of that technology will be the property of Apple.

A Reuters report stated that Apple will buy the company for $365 million, or $8.00 per share--a generous markup over yesterday’s closing price of $5.07 per share.

Apple will soon own this and the rest of AuthenTec's portfolio

AuthenTec has a nice-looking portfolio of products that range from identity management software with fingerprint sensors to NFC technology, which Apple can no doubt find useful. For some of Apple’s competitors, the acquisition means that they’ll (perhaps begrudgingly) be more beholden to the company, as AuthenTec lists Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Fujitsu, HBO, HP, Lenovo, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Samsung, Sky, and Texas Instruments as some of its higher-profile customers.
