There’s a bright spot or two peeking through the thick black cloud of Samsung’s current legal troubles, and one of them is the Samsung Galaxy Beam, a smartphone that packs a built-in projector. The device is now on sale in the UK for £395 (about $614 USD).

The pico projector inside is rated for 15 lumens and purports to project up to a 50-inch image and brings a whole new angle to the concept of sharing with a mobile device. Other specs include a dual-core Cortex A9 (1GHz) processor, 4-inch (480x800) display, 768MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage (with another 32GB available via the microSD slot), a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, and a 2000mAh Li-Ion battery that Samsung says can endure 3 hours of continuous playback.

The Beam also boasts WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, A-GPS, and microUSB port for added connectivity. If the added weight from the projector is a concern, it shouldn’t be; the Beam weighs in at 145.3g. The device runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is just about the only weak spot on this otherwise enticing phone.

It also appears to be available in Singapore--for $648 without a contract.

Android 2.3? With all the 4.1 goodness coming this month? Hopefully there will be an update available soon.

Otherwise, it seems awesome.

What part of "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" don't you understand?

I'm really glad this hasn't been released in the US yet so that maybe it can land with better specs by the time it gets here! Only a dual core 1ghz? 480x800? Not even 1gb of ram? And on top of it all gingerbread... It makes me think this phone may never be destined for a 4.x update before its released with a different model.

That said, I would love top tier phone like the galaxy line, nexus, iphone, WP8 to eventually start shipping phone with pico projectors as a standard feature.
