It’s pretty clear that Google’s Android Market is growing quickly and giving Apple some competition. A recent announcement from Google sheds a little more light on the growth of this app store. This past weekend, Google said the Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads. The current growth rate is one billion app downloads per month.
These numbers speak well of Android’s popularity and Google wants to celebrate. To that end, Google has partnered with some of the Android developers who have contributed to this milestone. Through these partnerships, a number of Android apps will be available for only 10 cents. The set of apps available for this low price will change every day and the sale will last for 10 days.
10 Billion Android Market downloads and counting
12/06/2011 10:03:00 AM - One billion is a pretty big number by any measurement. However, when it’s describing the speed at which something is growing, it’s simply amazing. This past weekend, thanks to Android users around the world, Android Market exceeded 10 billion app downloads—with a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month. We can’t wait to see where this accelerating growth takes us in 2012.
To celebrate this milestone, we partnered with some of the Android developers who contributed to this milestone to make a bunch of great Android apps available at an amazing price. Starting today for the next 10 days, we’ll have a new set of awesome apps available each day for only 10 cents each. Today, we are starting with Asphalt 6 HD, Color & Draw for Kids, Endomondo Sports Tracker Pro, Fieldrunners HD, Great Little War Game, Minecraft, Paper Camera, Sketchbook Mobile, Soundhound Infinity and SwiftKey X.
Of course, none of these apps would have existed if it weren’t for the developers who created them. Every day, these developers continue to push the limits on what’s possible and delight us in the process. For that, we thank them.
Please join us in this 10-day celebration and check in every day to see what new apps our developer partners are making available on Android Market—for only a dime.
Those #'s seem off to me. If the current rate is over 1 billion a month, and they just cleared 10 billion downloads then I'd rather read about the crazy rate at which their downloads per month have been improving. Is there a sudden influx of good apps I'm unaware of, or is the adoption of android devices really escalating?
to 10 billion, and BEYOND! im also glad they are running the 10 cent promo for different apps everyday. Its a cool way to celebrate.
wow.. thats quite the growth.
Congrats to Google for this huge milestone... What a way to celebrate with 10 cent apps lol
Agreed, and I for one am taking full advantage of the 10 cent sale!
Now you're just mashing it!
wish they would have superimposed the amount of current active devices. but good for google. like hell you'd see apple give a half-decent discount.

So far brought 8 apps :) Getting all i can out of these 10 days! Props to Android Market!
Went to go buy Swiftkey and it came out to 3.99 when I went to buy it even though it was listed as .10 cents on the market didn't buy it yet lol.
That is a huge growth rate, which iws amazing, but they are pretty far behind apple. apple hit the ten million mark 6 months ago. i would like to see the two graphs and compare them. it would be very enlightning, i feel that app downloads will plateu sometime in april after people have lost the enthusiasm for their tablets but then slowly keep going up as app producers try harder to keep people's attention then it will truley be a great app store.
That's great for Android! How many apps total are available now?
