All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but could playing Battlefield 3 turn little Gustaf into a sadistic rat killer? Depends on who you ask. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in Germany is taking issue with the fact that you can kill rats in a "sadistic manner." This, along with any killing of virtual animals, can have a "brutalizing effect" on impressionable young males, according to a Google translated press release.

The animal rights organization isn't happy about the fact that players can stab a rat in the back with a combat knife, pick up the dead rodent by the tail, and toss the carcass aside. According to PETA, repeated cases of animal cruelty in Germany are often directly inspired by violence in videogames and movies.

As far as we can tell, PETA isn't pitching to have the game banned, just strongly criticizing the decision to allow rat violence and urging Electronic Arts to think twice before including similar content in future games.

I don't get the controversy... I mean Duke Nukem Forever allowed you to pick up rats, throw them and even kill them (big or small); why didn't PETA criticize that? My reason, barely anybody picked up the Duke Nukem Forever game for PETA to justify complaining publically about...

Battlefield 3 however; is bigger then Duke Nukem will ever be and it feels rightfully so that PETA would target them. Not that it doesn't matter but honestly... I don't get the big deal about it...

Rats are a nusience if they manage to enter the house because they can cause some major annoyances and also some major damage. This is why we have rat traps and rat poison. If PETA wanted to complain about rats, they should of complained to the manufactures who produced those products; not to a videogame who's sole purpose is being a first person shooter.

Don't get me wrong, the PETA has done some good things over the years but complaining about a video game is not one of them...

"Hahaha, nice thumbnail. Its funny that PETA would go after this, when in BF3 you can cut a Virtual Humans's throat off, wouldn't that have a more "brutalizing effect" on impressionable young males?"

Really? It's a rat. They have people in this world who's job is to kill them, but one scene in a game with a rat getting stabbed and now it's evil? No wonder everyone thinks peta is a joke. They go after things that really make no sense. Prime has a point, the throat cutting is a little more trouble some then a rat.

PETA: Preventing Everything That's Allowed.

Come on, you fools, the game is about killing *HUMAN BEINGS*. If all you're worried about is a few digitally-simulated animals, then the problem of real-world cruelty to animals must have been solved, and you can go back to assaulting stupid women wearing bad fashion again.

As far as I am concerned, this is one animal-rescue volunteer who will refuse to work alongside PETA members in the future.

I think that's People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals... And as I stated before, it is ridiculous and I don't get that the PETA is worked up about.

Jack Thompson would also have something to get worked up about but I'm guessing he's waiting for Grand Theft Auto V to come out; I mean what can be more violent then drug deals, causing chaos and more bloody dismemberment then Battlefield 3 will ever have?

It's a mystery to find out what people are worked up about so in actuality, I'm guessing nobody has any problems with the games content; that includes the parents who may buy this game for their kids after doing the research.

PETA is getting ridiculous! Well, in my mind they've always been... but come on, It's a frickin' >VIRTUAL

They need to come up with something better to 'take a swing at'! But I guess as long as they're getting the publicity, it works out in their favor :s [facepalm]

I guess coming up behind some one in that game and stabbing them is fine and doesn't give any violent impressions.

BTW almost right after killing that rat in single player you have to stab some one in the back and kill about 10 people. ( not sure if PETA was so offended from that scene that they stopped playing right after it and didn't get to see that part)

They saw it but said that those bastards were probably killing rats themselves, so off with their heads!!

they also burn down testing facilities before freeing the animals... so the bar is pretty low on the logic meter.

"Thats sad, must be a radical extremist division withing PETA, R0LF. I'm surprise that they haven't gone after Mario. The guy jumps on turtles heads, squishes out their guts, and to add insult to injury, he uses their turtle shell to eliminate other turtles. But that's not all, He skins Racoons and wears them. Doesn't that encourage Young men and women to buy fur? and Jump on top of turtles?."

You kill more people in the game than animals, and no one complains about that but they complain about a rat or 2. And that's where we are today. Of course killing animals needlessly is not fine either, but PETA's grasping at straws here, and are showing themselves to be the nuts (I always thought) they are. I guess it's about generating PR, and given the reaction I've seen it would seem that aspect is working.

Let's be honest here, it's mostly a publicity stunt... But why anyone hasn't complained about the people you kill isn't a mystery to me; I mean we see people's throats getting slit on TV, we see blood and guts that was once unacceptable but is, we see violent stuff that gets by very easily in this day and age... And somehow someone playing a character where he kills people and slits their throat is less likely to make anybody do anything violent or corrupt their young minds, mostly because most of the stuff shown is seemingly accepted into culture...

That doesn't make it right though but you do have to see society though it's newer colored glasses... I mean violent is prevalent nowadays; and if these people say violence causes crime, where's the crime?

Besides, PETA only deals with the ethical treatment of ANIMALS (and apparently virtual animals Wink), so they wouldn't bother complaining about the ethical treatment of people.
