Apple is finally sharing the formalized specs on the iPhone 4S, and they confirm much of what we've suspected. The new phone looks nearly identical to the current iPhone 4, but is reportedly "all new" inside. Many analysts have speculated that the new iPhone 4S will fix the antenna issues that plagued the original iPhone 4. The phone may share the iPhone 4's brand, but the internal specs are significantly refreshed.

The new iPhone 4S is nearly identical in appearance to the iPhone 4.

Graphics performance is up to 7x higher than the iPhone 4 and the phone will use the dual-core A5 CPU that powers the iPad, albeit at a (probable) lower operating frequency. Apple claims the CPU is up to twice as fast as the iPhone 4's, with support for graphical features like crepuscular rays (God rays) courtesy of the new GPU. Apple claims that the new phone will offer up to 8 hours of 3G talk time, 14 hours of 2G talk time, and six hours of 3G browsing. Unlike previous iPhones, the 4S is a dual-antenna phone and supports both GSM and CDMA.

The camera has also gotten a substantial overhaul; Apple increased the camera's sensor to 8MP and now supports 3264x2448 resolution. The new illumination sensor can reportedly capture 73 percent more light per pixel, is 33 percent faster, and allows for better color accuracy and more color uniformity. The phone is now capable of 1080P video capture and real-time video stabilization, and can mirror content being streamed to an AppleTV via AirPlay.

The price for all these goodies is a bit disappointing--the new iPhone 4S will be $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. The iPhone 4 will be available for $99 (8GB flavor), and--in contrast to what we expected--the iPhone 3GS will be free. All of these prices, including the 3GS, require a two-year contract.

Preorders on the iPhone 4S will start October 7; the phone will be available on October 15. Availability will be across AT&T, Verizon, and new partner Sprint.

Opinions around the office on the new iPhone are mixed. Yours truly thinks the iPhone 4 is a definite step forward for the series, particularly where the new camera, 1080P video playback, and much-improved game performance and battery life are concerned, but others *coughcoughMARCOcoughcough* think Apple is relying on brand loyalty to trump customer sense and points out that features like 4G and 1080P playback have been available on competitor products for quite awhile. Apple claims that the new 4S will deliver 4G-like performance on 3G hardware--a claim that, if true, trumps support for a standard that hasn't reached much of the US yet.

There was no mention of the much-anticipated iPhone 5. If Sprint truly bought itself an exclusive launch, it isn't getting the product announcement today.

"Thanks for the run down Joel, I think that those features are enough for me to consider buying back into an Iphone. I never had a problem with the device, It was more of a problem with ATT coverage (or lack off). Off course, this is just one side, there is also what IOS 5 is going to bring to the table along with the Iphones improvements. "

"Also reading about *Siri Voice*, thats hot and Also *Find My Friend* app, thats cool. to an extent."

Eh. Like I said before, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I still find the disinclusion of 4G disapointing, I mean they have 8MP cameras and 1080P video recording and they can't even include 4G? Come on!

Although if it does happen to have 3G performance on 4G hardware and if the prices manage to be reasonable for my broken old wallet; yeah, I might buy into one.

The "4G" moniker has been ruined by different technologies masquerading as LTE when they ought to be labeled "3G+." I care a lot more about battery life than 4G. Then again, I also own an iPhone 3G, so upgrading--even to just an iPhone 4--would be a huge step up.

I personally haven't decided if I'll go for an iPhone 4 or 4S. Either way, it'll be a few months. I'm normally not a gadget person, but I'm actually considering an iPhone 4 + Kindle Fire. If I decide I want a Fire, I'll definitely go for the 4, not the 4S.

I still think Apple has the best smart phone hands down and think this launch makes the I-Phone 4 all the more compelling especially at $99.

I cant believe I am saying this but, I did.

Wow; in today's market, and Apple goes almost 2 years with the same model smart phone a lil some duct tape, and the sheep say BAHHHHHHHHH and not much else! ROFL all us other smart phone users should have quad core phones by next month this time or at least December. I cannot believe they can dump there users like that and still get love after hyping this conference and its nothing but a refresh!

The voice thing is cool, but the phone is kinda of a let down. The software is what is going to carry this phone now. And yes ThunderBird, the iphone 4 at $100 is a steal IMO.

And apple stock drops!!! They are smart with their pricing structure though....who would buy a charge or thunderbolt when you could get this for less? I'll see what sammy has to offer next week.....

Now you're just mashing it!

Hey drake give Sammy a minute the new Nexus is coming as is supposedly a G2 HD, and maybe a G3 from what I am hearing relatively soon. The G2 has a higher res LED display that the current G and G2. That's if our dedicated to Sammy every Android manufacturer has loads of stuff coming before or by Christmas from what it looks like. This 4S phone it looks like is just going to be lost in the shuffle. I feel sorry for Sprint as no matter who is running them they always seem to make flawed business decisions (MSI, NEXTEL, Wimax etc, etc) that keep them running for a bit then fail or at least degrade as decisions.
