Last November when we launched our $7.99 unlimited streaming plan, DVDs by mail was treated as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan. At the time, we didn’t anticipate offering DVD only plans. Since then we have realized that there is still a very large continuing demand for DVDs both from our existing members as well as non-members. Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs. Yeah, not so much. Also, we reject the idea that anyone actually drinks wine while eating popcorn Creating an unlimited DVDs by mail plan (no streaming) at our lowest price ever, $7.99, does make sense and will ensure a long life for our DVDs by mail offering.
Our current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans: Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming), for $7.99 a month. The price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). For new members, these changes are effective immediately; for existing members, the new pricing will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.
Netflix is still a mega deal and we use it in place of pay channels and rentals. However, I do hope this means that their DVD only releases will be now available via download.
Netflix is doing this because of the massive increase in their streaming content cost.

Yes it's me, original account still glitched Dave! Marco! Help!!!

First it was the increased costs of mailing out discs, now we have to pay for their streaming costs and licensing deals. hopefully Cinema Now or Vudu will add all you can eat pricing so we can compare. I've had a decent experience with Cinema Now.
What I think would be smart is to have the streaming add on for the unlimited DVD plan if you subscribe to both you should get a discount. I agree hopefully this means that someone with an unlimited streaming account will be able to get newer movies and content sooner.

"Great Observation. I Dont use Netflix anymore, but I think those plans are fair, there is obvious demand for Netflix and a rising cost for them to keep up with the demand. Netflix service and content will get better I predict."

As soon as they start with the bigger charges, I'll drop them. Too bad, because I like the service.
Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.

Even at $16 a month Netflix is still a steal.
Red box charges you $1 a night... plus the gas it took to get there and back, and there and back again to return it. That $1 movie just cost you .5-1gallon of gas $2-4 So it's really about $3-5 a rental. after 2 or 3 rentals... you're already over the price of netflix at $8 a month for DVD rental alone and then $8 for unlimited streaming! I've said it before... I would gladly pay more than the $10 they were charging for the service. It is still an amazing deal.
Tho I do agree they should offer a discount for using both services to keep people happy.

I understand that they're still the best deal out there. But a 60% increase for no gains in service is not how to keep your customers happy.
They're blowing it and we're trying to let them know about it.
