Remember when game consoles were for playing games and nothing else? Actually, don't answer that, lest you date yourself as an old fogey. The consoles of today are used for much more than just gaming, sitting in our living rooms streaming music, movies, and photos, tapping into Netflix, and even allowing us to burn a few hundred calories jumping up and down in front of motion sensors. Because of these expanded capabilities, both Microsoft and Sony have been content to tweak their respective consoles with slimmer designs and more storage space rather than release brand new hardware, but if the latest rumors are any indication, look for Microsoft to announce a successor to the Xbox 360 at next year's E3 Expo.

This year's E3 Expo belonged to Nintendo and it's Wii U unveiling, but according to Videogamer.com, Microsoft will steal the show in 2012 with its Xbox 720 device, or whatever the successor will be called. In fact, Crytek is already developing a new TimeSplitters game for next generation of consoles, Videogamer.com says.

As the rumor goes, Microsoft is still batting around hardware options, but Crytek is banking on DirectX 11 playing prominently into the 720 and is using the API as the basis for next-generation development.

And that's really all we know at this point, which isn't much, nor has the information been confirmed by Crytek or Microsoft. In other words, keep your fingers crossed and take this with a healthy dose of salt.

I remember the good old days of playing Journey on my dad's Atari 2600. The graphics were amazing.... at the time. lol :) Cool-looking concept of art of XBOX 720 console and controller.

Good news indeed as Developers are IMO held back by consoles and PC gamers suffer. I like the idea what DICE did with Battlefield 3 which was according to them build for the PC and ported to consoles but often not I think it is the other way around.

As a former skater I understood the whole 360 and now 720 naming scheme but what comes after a 720??? Just something to think about.....

@ omegadoom13 I remember it vividly the good old 2600 I remember playing the ping pong game with the turn dial control. How about Frogger or they had a drag racing game I used to enjoy.

-_- its not called the xbox 720... i dont understand why people think will be called 720. the 360 was called 360 because you get a full 360° of entertainment and 720 is two 360s so how the hell does that make sense in your brain that it will be 720?

900, and then after that 1080.

I don't know if the rumor will come true. I mean the logic behind it is reasonable but to announce it at E3 they would have to been working on it for 2-3 years; and I doubt that they would be left in the dust by a Nintendo console that's more powerful then the Xbox 360 and will probably sell more then the 360 and PS3 combined.

I'm dubious of this announcement. MS is pushing the idea that it's firmly focused on Kinect and the XBox 360. Giving the fact that hardware hasn't apparently been finalized, a new console is still probably at least two years away. It wouldn't be surprising if MS unveiled a proof-of-concept prototype in 2012, but took a year to actually start shipping anything.

Personally, I'm still thinking three years--but we'll see.

Enough to keep them floating. I mean the games that are still being released on the systems still look good despite being on 6-year old hardware.

Absolutely right, Optimus. I mean,l where's the Kinect eye... to watch what brands are on your T-Shirt and target you with specifically related advertisements?

I have to agree with you Joel I would think we would have heard rumors of this by now and I doubt Microsoft would have let Nintendo steal the show as much as they did this year.

The first XBox's had defective DVD drives... after nearly 2 years...

Then the 360's had the red ring of death... after nearly 2 years...

I'm guessing the 720 will accidentally set your breaker box on fire, but not until 2 years after you buy it.

I'm skipping this one.

Well, the concept looks cool....but im a PC gamer through and through. Part of the fun for me is building the computer and buying parts for the best performance for the price. Course i still have an Xbox 360, got it for free. It was RROD'd and i fixed it. The nice thing about consoles is that you can tweak the software to run more efficiently on them so that more taxing games on PC's run fluidly on consoles. But, they arent my cup of tea.

Rumors of the successor to the XBOX 360 being revealed at E3 2012? E3 just finished a few days ago and already rumors for the next are flying around the web. Really wish we could enjoy the present taking simple delight in the moment; no chance of that though in this we need it now society.

If I remember what I read about correctly, not until 2013 at least.

@ LLeCompte

I almost definitely will at least support DX10.1 since the Wii U is based on the AMD R700. Im not really concerned about horse power on the new consoles. If Nintendo is going high power, you know microsoft and sony wont slump.
