I think what has me most excited about AMD's push for GPGPU hardware and software support was an article i read on real world technologies. David Kanter did an analysis of the info on Bulldozer and he suggested that it seemed like at some point AMD may be looking to some how integrate the GPU directly into the CPU so that they are one in the same and no longer just on the same die. That sounds absolutely amazing, and im really excited to see what it is AMD has plans for.
Definitely agree with you pwrntspd some of the things AMD seems to be coming up with are amazing. I wonder what they would call it if they were able to integrate the GPU and CPU into one core... Imagine a die with 8 CPU/GPU's on it.
Or 2 x cpu & 8x gpu - doable - may revolutionisse cloud servers
I sure hate this auto-eraser, er- I mean the site's auto-refresh....wiped my whole post :'( . Anyhow, as I was starting to say.....
If what *pwrntspd* is saying is true, PCs would be revolutionized, though I'm sure that combined gpu/cpus wouldn't match the power of discrete graphics for a while. One thought that scares me a little regarding that happening is if Nvidia would counter AMD's technology by joining forces with Intel to make a combined chip. Now that would spell doom for AMD. Possibly by that time though, Nvidia will know enough about making chips that they will be competing in the desktop cpu range, and could make their own combo chip. It's interesting to think about, if nothing else.
