The digital world, and the Internet in particular, is getting a lot more social. By the day now, things are becoming more and more connected, and Google's making up for lost time with their newest addition. The +1 button has been rolling out since March, giving users the ability to recommend content to your friends and contacts directly from Google search results and ads. But Google noticed something: oftentimes, users wanted to "+1 a page" while on it.

This week, the company's introducing +1 buttons to the entire Internet. As a result, you might start seeing +1 appear on sites large and small across the Internet. Google has partnered with a few sites where you’ll see +1 buttons in the near future:

With a single click you can recommend that raincoat, news article or favorite sci-fi movie to friends, contacts and the rest of the world. If you see a site you like, +1 it. It's like Liking a webpage, in a sense. If you’re a webmaster, you can get the +1 button code and learn more about implementation on the company's +1 webmaster site.

Do we have the option of "-1 it" if we don't like a particular website/article/movie/etc., or if we mistakenly +1 something that we really don't want our contacts to know about? :)

Let's hope Google has privacy controls already in place for this . I wouldn't want to this to turn into early Facebook, when privacy controls were almost nonexistent. :)

I think it would make more sense for this to just effect the sites rating and how it falls on their search results and not so much automatically be shared with friends. This will certainly throw some interesting points into search engine optimization for webmasters where some creative coding etc could land sites at the top of the results even if they were not relevant.

LOL! Nope, we're not brothers. I really like his name though, so I'm giving him +1 :)

I guess the success of the +1 will depend on how easily the individual's social network is able to see the +1s.

I would call it a fail, though not as hard as Wave.

Meh. I'm not as wild as +1 as the others and I'm not really planning on using it in any way possible.

However; those worried about accidentally sharing something they don't want their contacts to know about can actually opt-out of those sites. It's all listed here: http://www.google.com/intl/en/privacy/plusone/

Or, you can exercise all of the self control you can and not click that +1 button; I mean that thing was just designed to be noticed by passing eyes.

I feel the same way.  I'll probably get to the point where I become desensitized from seeing the "+1" everywhere... and not even notice it.  Big Smile

I could care less about having another way to share interesting links with people I know. If Google somehow incorpoated this +1 system into its search engine, things could get really interesting.

Whoa!  That's so funny.  Have you ever played Unreal Tournament online?  Your name looks familiar from when I played UT.
