Walmart Scaling Back Electronics Department to Make Room for Fishing Poles

You may have noticed a larger electronics section in your local Wally World. That's because over the past couple of years, Walmart devoted about 20 percent more floor space to push home entertainment items, and in particular television sets. But with consumers showing little interest in 3D TVs, and with popular electronic gadgets shrinking in size, Walmart has made the decision to scale back its electronics department and use the space to sell things like fishing poles, fabric, and full-figure fashions, according to Reuters.

"It's still a vibrant category but much smaller items are being sold," said Rosalind Brewer, president of Walmart East.


Walmart said it will still sell the same number of products, but in a smaller physical space. The company is looking to reduce about 2,000 square feet per store from the category, resulting in an overall reduction of 7.2 million square feet across all stores.

While Walmart didn't come out and say it, you have to wonder how much of this decision was made based on shoppers flocking online for electronics. It's interesting to note that sales have fallen for seven consecutive quarters in Walmart stores that have been open for at least a year. In addition, Best Buy has made a big effort to land popular electronic items in the past couple of years, including Amazon's Kindle and of course Apple's iPad.

Yes this could well be due to internet transaction,but I'd rather say that the current economic times are the cause of their floor space being devoted to something else,like fishing poles etc.

^ I agree, i think it's both economic times and internet shopping. You can get better quality for the same price from newegg or amazon. And at the same time people who usually shop at walmart are on a budget so with the economy as it is there isn't as much room for electronics.

Now you're just mashing it!

yes mainstream electronics shopping has been progressing to online to resellers such as newegg and manufacturers such as Acer/HP/Toshiba selling products from their websites allowing customization for the practical end user.

I personally wouldnt by any TV at walmart...the local walmart retailers dont understand TV...so Best Buy or Fry's Electronic store is the place to buy HDTV...and the Internet.

I would do the same thing and reduce some of the aisles in the electronic section of the big Wal-Mart store in my area and use the space for items that people were actually interested in purchasing .they could easily reduce the square footage for the electronics area by at least 25-30 % for more profitable items.

the full figure fashion/fishing demographic embraced by walmart- sounds like a smart move to me

I know what I'm getting beforehand, so I shop for the best price and WalMart's prices usually trump Best Buy's and Frys too. Returns are a lot easier at WalMart too. Costco has some really good deals as well.

Costco doubles the manufacturer's warranty and pays a living wage to it's employees - Wal-Mart doesn't.

I hardly ever shop at physical locations anymore. I do all my research online, and pretty much everyone has a method of selling and shipping items to you. I usually only go into stores if I don't want to pay for shipping or want it immediately. I have amazon prime and I am trying out shoprunner so soon I will never have to leave my house.

ROFL Super Dave I have received many of those picture emails. From what I have heard Wally World is actually making some rather large changes. The primary reasoning of this it seems is to get back customers as well as really beat everyone price wise like they used to do on everything. It also involves a re-generalization of what they carry store wide to make them more of a general store where everything is available rather than a structured marketing picture.

Wally-World made a decision a few years back, cutting quantities and many traditional items, scaling way back, just to make room for a totally expanded electronics department and other upscale, high dollar items throughout the store. (someone's bright-assed idea for bigger profits during a worldwide recession) People who relied on Wally for many items could no longer find them there. The result of that playing around with a winning formula is that for the first time ever, Target has surpassed them in sales in quit a few areas. Wally's bottom line has shrunk every year since they changed the store and Target's has just grown. Now Wally is faced with part of it's customer base having finally tried Target, and they're liking it.

Let's just say that the stockholders have finally spoken, and that they're changing it all back to what it once was, hoping to re-attract missing elements of their customer base.

As long as that smaller physical space isn't too crowded, I think this is a wise move for Walmart. Anymore, many of us do our research online anyway, so we're only in the store to pick up what we want.

I sometimes order from them, and they "ship to my store" for free. So even if they cost a little more, the free shipping brings down their price.

noticed that is seems like Wal-mart does cater to full-figured folks when looking for a belt or jeans and cannot seem to find my size
