Olive Telecom Launches OliveSmart V-S300 Android 2.3 Smartphone

One of the reasons that Nokia decided to partner with Microsoft to embed Windows Phone 7 into future Nokia handsets was this: there's too big a risk for phones to become "commoditized" with Android. In other words, Android phones are a dime a dozen, and just about anyone can build one. Nokia simply didn't want to become "one of the crowd," as the Nokia label just means too much. We can understand that, and it actually makes a lot of sense for the company.

But Olive Telecom is in a different situation. They're making the most of having the opportunity to produce an Android phone, with the OliveSmart V-S300 being the first Indian HSPA+ Android Gigerbread smartphone. The phone's no slouch. It'll ship with Qualcomm's Snapdragon MSM8255 processor and Android 2.3. That's the same OS that is shipping on the Nexus S, and it's one of only a few phones we have heard of with that build of Android on it.

There's a 4.1" multi-touch display, a 1GHz processor, Adreno 205 graphics engine, 3G HSPA+ connectivity, Wi-Fi, a 5MP camera (with flash and auto-focus), a front-facing camera, accelerometer, proximity sensor, Bluetooth 2.1, 32GB of expandable memory and a 1400mAh battery.

The OliveSmart V-S300 is being launched in the Indian market at a price less than Rs 20000/-, but it's unclear if this phone will ever ship elsewhere (possibly as a white-label device). Another Android 2.3 phone would be a welcome addition to the market, that's for sure.
