I ended up taking it to a place, they told me it was the processor because they got it to boot with an i3. Newegg was good about replacing it, got it yesterday and....it still didn't work.

So I took it back to the place and now they're saying it must be the PSU (even though I very specificly asked them about that before) they're going to test it some more tomorrow to make sure. The guy there suggested that if my power supply is messed up enough to fry my previous processor then I should probably replace the motherboard as well just to be on the safe side because even if I don't see it now it might well be messed up from improper power as well.

It's all very frustrating when all I want to do is play some games.

yes that is frustrating.  I have had to RMA some parts myself, and Its no fun waiting around.  Probably discouraging to happen on your first build, but things happen every once in a while.  Good luck getting it all together

Sounds like a win-win for the guy. Just make sure that anything he takes out of that PC stays with you and doesn't go to him. He doesn't get to keep any of it.

Also,.....If the system boots with the i3 CPU in it, then the motherboard is OK. The RAM is OK, the video Card is OK. (it's booting, right?)

"Just to be on the safe side" is a technical expression used to rip one's balls out through his wallet.

What he's suggesting is that I warranty it through newegg, he's not trying to keep any of my stuff. Prior to me asking them to do a full diagnostic, he even suggested that I could test out the motherboard myself by buying a new one at the local Fry's because they don't charge a restocking fee. I did that and had concluded it wasn't the motherboard. My motherboard is working fine now, pretty sure, what he's suggesting is that the improper power supply could have caused damage that won't actually become apparent until some time down the road, and seeing how I have to go through all this anyway, and it doesn't cost me anything, why not cover the bases.

It was never a case of an improper power supply. It was a lightning storm that zapped the computer and screwed it up.

I'm glad that your tech is not trying to take advantage of the situation. Many computer techs do.

Well now he's saying he tested the PSU and that isn't it. My second processor isn't working and one stick of RAM isn't working so he thinks its the Mobo messing everything else up. I don't know what to think at this point.

@ Neil: CA bay area

So any way, after some back and forth Newegg are refunding me for the Mobo and Memory and are even replacing the CPU for the second time. I got to hand it to them, I was really pretty impressed with their speed, professionalsim, and just the fact that they were willing to replace the second cpu after hearing my story. Newegg will get my stuff in probably two days or so, I'll purchase a new motherboard and RAM and probably be ready to try again by next week.

God I hope the people helping me out actually know what their talking about, they say it is definately not the PSU. They also say that they see alot of problems with GIGABYTE motherboards and recommended that I go with ASUS instead. For memory they also recomended that I go with Crucial or Mushkin over Gskill. Any thoughts on that?

So there's no way I can physically help you from Virginia, sorry about that.

Resin:
God I hope the people helping me out actually know what their talking about, they say it is definately not the PSU.

That's the very first thing I would have replaced and if the PC will not boot up on the bench when you get the new parts this time then I hope that you'll give it some serious consideration.

If this occurs, then think of trying the SeaSonic brand please,......

****************************

Resin:
They also say that they see a lot of problems with GIGABYTE motherboards and recommended that I go with ASUS instead.

I hear good and bad about both brands. Fact is that people use them both all of the time without issues. I like my ASRock P55 Pro boards, and I just got another one of them along with an i7-870 that works without problems. I think that you can get a bad board from any manufacturer sometimes.

Resin:

I've used all three brands and have seen the best performance and compatibility with GSKill. This is especially true with Intel P55 Chipset mainboards. That's why I recommend that brand. I have four 2GB sticks of GSKill  RipJaws in each of my three PC's here and there's been never any failures. (comes with a lifetime guarantee too)

Geil is another good brand.

Der Meister:
Hey neil, you think they used a multi meter, and used it correctly, when they tested his PSU?

"and used it correctly" Surprise

I wonder if our masked multi meter bandit lives in the bay area? Hahahahaah!

I keep 3 known good PSU's around here to bench and test with. I have them because I replaced all 3 of mine with far lower wattage SeaSonic PSU's during last year. I wanted cleaner power and better quality too. Plenty of testing and research has shown that there is no need for gigenormous mega-watt power supplies in PC's these days. Clean and stable power are far more important over the long run.

My smallest PSU last year was an 850 Watt and it's been replaced with a 500 watt SeaSonic brand. A SeaSonic 650 and 700 replaced a pair of 1000Watt PSU's in the other two boxes. Everything works without any problems too.

That already seems wrong in my head.  If the cpu worked Newegg would not have replaced it, they would send it back to you...

Well regardless I replaced the mobo with a ASUS P7P55D-E LX LGA1156 and the memory with  Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3. I'm just waiting on the processor now, I've been kind impressed that newegg has been willing to replace it yet again, third times the charm, gotta be. It should be here tomorrow. Of course if it is my PSU and my tech guy is actually this multi-meter bandit this will all be for naught, but I think this is it, hope so.

Confused

First, let me say that I really do hope it boots up and runs perfectly for you. You've been waiting for a long time to start enjoying this PC again. (like the first day you used it)

Resin:
I replaced the mobo with

Resin:
and the memory with

Resin:
waiting on the processor

So,.......If it doesn't boot up this time, then it would pretty much HAVE to be the PSU that's screwed up since you have all new parts, yet again, and still the same PSU. (and after a lightning storm too)

I hope that it just works,........

It works!

woohooo!

....and about time.

My conversation with my tech guy:

Did you test the PSU? You did test the PSU? You tested the PSU with a multimeter?

He gave me many reassurances, everything does seem fine.

I even hooked up two monitors, woah crazy (hey I've been using a 1990's Dell for the past 12 years what can I say)! My old monitor looks so crappy next to the new one it reminds me of looking through a tiny algae covered fishtank, I knew it was a crappy monitor but its amazing just how crappy it looks in conjunction with new one. I haven't decided if I'll keep it hooked up or not, its still more desktop space. Everything seems quite satisfying I even got a little gaming in last night.

I know i'm a couple of months into is.... but any fix?

I had a similar problem once, and i realized it was a frayed wire from connecting the power/hddled/reset. One of the cables was popped out of the plastic housing and was touching the other...

I was damn lucky that nothing got fried... though this was like 4 years ago. My PC is still running, and works like a champ!

None ever figured out. He just kept replacing parts until it worked. I guess what matters is that it works. It took a while to get it done.

Yes, I should probably dial it back a bit so I don't ignore my job. But yes, I've been having a great time with Mount and Blade and Metro 2033, I finally bought the orange box figuring I should play some portal before portal 2 comes out. The Dragon Age II demo convinced me that I should play it on the PS3 and the PC, really looking forward to Deus Ex 3 and Skyrim. I went ahead and got Gimp and Inkscape(?I think it was)  I'll probably get blender and unity as well just to futz around.
