To say that Steam is doing well would be like saying Bill Gates has a little bit of money saved up. You think? Steam isn't just doing well, it's growing at a phenomenal rate. According to Valve, there are now over 30 million active accounts on Steam, and growing.

"Steam is on track to record the biggest year in its six year history," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve. "The year has marked major development advances to the platform with the introduction of support for Mac titles, the Steam Wallet and in-game item buying support, and more. We believe the growth in accounts, sales, and player numbers is completely tied to this work and we plan to continue to develop the platform to offer more marketing, sales, and design tools for developers and publishers of games and digital entertainment"

We have no reason to doubt Newell's prediction. Valve's latest figures reveal an obscene new account growth rate of 178 percent and sales growth of over 200 percent. There are now over 1,200 games offered through Steam, contributing to six million unique gamers logging into the service each day.

I wonder how long before Valve realizes that they can expand beyond games and become the equivalent of the iPhone App Store for PC's and Macs?

They better hurry, I think Apple's about to extend iTunes in this direction, and Microsoft's leaked Windows 8 docs say that they are going to do this as well. Ubuntu Linux added an app store to the in v10.10, though they haven't put the apps in it yet.

What part of "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" don't you understand?

Yeah they are the app store way before the other app stores. Would be cool if I could get more programs from Steam.

Steam is a good idea that I resisted for years. I just didn't like any company knowing so much about my gaming activities. Now I don't care,..........and everything stays up to date too.

Dogs are great judges of character, and if your dog doesn't like somebody being around, you shouldn't trust them.

They even update your AMD graphics card drivers. Though Nvidia is not on board as of right now. Guess that is kinda branching out past games. Stick out tongue

Also I'm late to the party. July 23, 2006 here.
