You could argue that the browsers on the iPhone and Android saved mobile browsing. Before those, mobile browsing was usually limited. Very limited. Few desktop websites could be viewed on mobile browsers, and for years people begged and pleaded for a mobile version of Firefox. Now they have it. You could argue that it's too late to make a serious impact, but it's never too late for competition.

Mozilla has just announced that the Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile is now available to download and test. For now, it's only available on Android and Maemo. It does support Firefox Sync, add-ons and the "Awesome Bar," and Mozilla has worked hard to improve responsiveness in this build. They have announced two major changes to make that happen: Electrolysis and Layers. The alpha contained Electrolysis which allowed the browser interface to run in a separate process from the one rendering Web content, resulting in a much more responsive browser, but this beta brings the Layers pieces which improve overall performance and in graphics areas such as scrolling, zooming and animations.

It also supports pinch-to-zoom on multi-touch handsets, and the Awesome Screen instantly gives you access to your recent history, bookmarks and tabs just by tapping in the Awesome Bar. Developers have the power to use the latest Web technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to to build fast, powerful and beautiful mobile apps and add-ons, so what are you waiting for? It's a free download!

Been using the Beta for Win-7 and it's a little buggy. Went back to the release version yesterday.

Finally, this is the extra push to move me to one of the Android giants, instead of the mind crushing 2GB plan I was planning on moving too.
