When you mean halt, do you mean completely frozen? or does it stop during bootup then resets?

It could be a number of things. Are you running any overclocks? I recently (as in last night) had a sata port die off and initially it would just freeze on bootup I thought it was an overclocking issue at first so it could also be that.  If its a windows problem (freezes on the windows loading screen or resets on that windows loading screen), you can pop in your windows CD and do a repair or system restore.

did you check the CPU, maybe it's not being cooled adequately or maybe you need to replace it. That's what happened to my CPU when it was dying, it halted at various times then eventually, it would not boot up and it was rendered dead.

Either way, it could be those two things.

Could be a number of problems.            You have to eliminate the possible problems one by one.

First, post your system's specs.   To help, we have to know what you have inside the computer. What motherboard? What CPU?, What RAM is it? What is the Power Supply Unit model and brand? Is the computer using on-board graphics? Is there a discrete video card? Is your computer packed inside of a case with good airflow for cooling purposes?

Have you added anything new to the computer recently?          If so, what?

Please provide us with a little more information to work with.

I don't think he is suggesting he has a virus.

hitech is correct. There is no way to provide any reasonable help and advice without knowing all of the system's specifications

What motherboard is it? What RAM is in there? What operating system is it?

Is the system over-clocked?

Does a visual inspection of the motherboard show any bulging or leaking Caps?

What's the make and model of the Power Supply Unit?

Where is the OP?
