In general, notebooks have remained the same for well over a decade. They've grown thinner, they've become more powerful, and more ports have emerged, but the general premise hasn't changed much. Apple took a nice step in the right direction with the button-free, multi-touch trackpad, but Acer may have just taken things to the next level.

The Acer Aspire Ethos range makes itself special with a touch-screen trackpad; yes, a trackpad you can actually see on. The display isn't 1080p or anything, but it does have enough pixels to show some basic functions and allow for certain tweaks right from the trackpad. It's certainly an amazing idea, and if executed well, it could change the way we think about keyboard shortcuts on the go.

The Aspire Ethos 8943G is loaded in other ways as well; there's a 1080p display, HDMI output, Blu-ray drive, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 (or 5650) GPU, a fingerprint reader, Core i5 or i7 CPU, up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a lovely overall design. The trackpad is still more notable than all of that; users can press a toggle button, and the mouse function vanishes while touch sensitive buttons for controlling media pop up. In the future, these commands could correspond to just about anything. Ideas from the crowd, perhaps?

Yeah, that's ridiculously cool. After all those concepts of a macbook doing this over a year ago, I'm surprised no one else did this sooner. Way to go, Acer!

That is an interesting feature. But what really surprised me is that this is one nice gaming notebook. i7 paired with a 5850!!!

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

Wow, This thing is COOOOL!!

Is this another April fools joke? Under that list of strange occurrences we know only in the TWZ?

I checked Acer website and they didn't have this one listed. I thought it looked way to cool to be true :(

Something like this would definitely make me want to upgrade my tablet, to use as an on the go entertainment center! My only concerns is, would it have HDMI, and what is the battery life! Can it stand up to a six+hour flight?

From what I can see, this looks amazing. I would like to see it with that keypad sealed for water protection?
