The game is on. Blizzard has begun private beta-testing of StarCraft II. Koreans are rejoicing right now (for those unaware, Korea is still ga-ga over StarCraft).

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the sequel to Blizzard Entertainment's 1998 hit game StarCraft, arguably one of the greatest games of all-time. Gamers worldwide (but not here) are receiving invitations to that (sob) private beta.

Blizzard is seeking feedback on the multiplayer balance of StarCraft II, and also on the revamped Battle.net service, the online platform for StarCraft, World of Warcraft, and now StarCraft II.

In Blizzard's press release announcing the (sob) private beta, Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment said:
"Gathering concentrated feedback from our players is an important step for us as we head into the final stretch of development for StarCraft II and the new Battle.net service. We look forward to having our players' help in polishing the overall experience and preparing for launch."

I keep refreshing my mailbox wishing I had an invite. I LOVE STARCRAFT! I lost many hours doing multiplayer matches for days straight. I will have this game when it releases. This is one game I would probably buy for all my friends so I could force them to play matches with me.

Interesting, why us Blizzard not allowing any testers from the US though? When it gets released here I will have to check this one out.

I do like Blizzard-- their GMs actually listen to you and are helpful, they've implemented some of my suggestions, and they're dedicated to improving the amount of fun people have in their games. (Plus they release for the Mac and Windows at the same time.)

I tried Warcraft and didn't much like it; RTS games aren't my forte. However, Diablo I and II still live on my old system. I'm waiting for the iPhone port. So I could kick myself for not signing on to WoW earlier than I did, rather than going through SOE hell for several years. I doubt if I'll buy Starcraft II, but if there's ever a Universe of Starcraft, I'm there.

Are they still making the game so that you can't LAN? (all the multiplayer games have to go thru Battle.net they were saying, to prevent pirating theoretically IIRC)

If they changed their minds and let LAN back in I could see myself get this, but having to hook everyone at a LAN party up to the net instead of getting no lag for a local game is lame.

I'd like to get in on the Beta, but it's not top on my list for the main reason that the hype has died in perspective.  It's turning into a let down for me, and just because there's a beta doesn't mean that they're done.  Either way I may pick it up a few months after release.  As for a Starcraft universe, I doubt they will make one.

Honestly, I'm surprised it's even at beta stage, I have been claiming that it is the new Duke Nukem Forever for years.

I was almost sure it'd never come out, thinking that blizzard thought it'd be too hard to count all the cash they'd get with all their accountants busy counting the money WoW has been pulling in, but I guess joining activision finally gave them enough corporate accountants for the job.

Have had my fingers' crossed for a beta invite as well, but would rather see the game actually released in a timely manner.  I'm with you on that Soupstyle, Blizzard definitely seems to have slowed their game development since WoW.
