Michael Dell, it seems, likes to live with his upcoming products a bit before the company releases them to market.  Apparently, the casually unsuspecting Dell CEO decided he'd show off his goods to a passing-by member of the TechCrunch team.  And no it wasn't a Rolex knock off but perhaps something just as flashy.  The Dell Mini 5, as he called it, is a 1GHz Snapdragon-driven MID (Mobile Internet Device) running the Android OS.  It reportedly has a built-in 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity.  Have a look-see...

The Mini 5 is a 5-inch tablet PC that is rumored to be selling for the hefty sum of over $1K but that's before contract with a 3G carrier of some flavor.  Please God, give AT&T a break...  Michael was kind enough to tell the probing TechCrunch reporter that the device would be available in "a couple of months".  Based on the fact that there's a snowy scene in the background, we can say that generally means we're looking a spring thaw launch time frame.

Bigger than the iPhone? Unless that's an enormous mutant hand, not that much bigger. The price is too high as well, unless it's got some standout specs-- and for handhelds, specs are a funny game; there's a fine line between "not enough" and "too much" (i.e., much of the power is wasted on the form factor).

I'm not sure I can consider anything under 7" a tablet. Seems like an extremely expensive ($1k? wow) PDA with internet.

The form is nice though did anyone notice the touchscreen was a little on the sluggish side? I wonder what kind of a processor it has.

5" is kinda in the middle. For that price people will almost certainly prefer the iPhone. A 7" model which could do all the things an iPad should have, would be a lot more competitive.

Yeah to me as a tablet it needs about 2 inches more screen width, as a hand held an inch less in both directions a smart phone close to the same maybe a 1.25 less what is this thing supposed to be reading on it or filling anything out would have to be held in landscape position the it's to short the other direction to narrow

That was one thing I was seeing on the new NEC phone if it has such a low speed snapdragon is that one seriously underclosked. I mean since from what I have been hearing current snapdragons are 1ghz processor's. However from what I was hearing in another forum is it was either 433 or 466 so the oems up or down clock them as they go out the door or whatever. Why would you want to put out a product today with lower perf it makes no sense to me. From what I understand the iPhone and droid use this model to  but they are not clocked that low. Either way say I got a dell unit I need to figure out what to use to get in so I can clock it at least partially back up to full.

Haha, well you can see why Michael Dell is personally peddling this...

If the price was less than $500, I would be willing to give this a shot.

Over $1k?!! IDTS, Tim. I'd buy the crippled iPad before I dropped that much money. Hopefully, they'll keep the price closer to that of my Mini 10v (NOT running Windoze, thank you - UNR rawks!). If they can do that, they may have me. Looks like a sweet little device.

That was my sentiment as well. The Archos 9 is half as much. For $800 you can get the Alienware M11x which packs quite a bit of punch.

Sound like the Apple-Tax revisited to me. No thanks

I don't know Dell has been screwy for some time. I remember when I used to do support for Dell, everything was about the most solid equipment and support. I mean they were adamant about it at many levels. Then they just fell off that rocking horse. I wrote a letter to Michael Dell (through company email), of course I am sure he never got it. But, I was asking whatever happened to the root of his business being solid units and support. I never heard back of course. Either way they must have 10 boards of people make separate decision it's the only reason I can think of the wide split between everything.

I doubt he read it, but there would be no answer to give for why they were at that time slacking so badly.
