As many of you know, we have been running a contest with our friends at Viddler, where you could have had a shot at winning a Flip UltraHD pocket camcorder.  To say it has been an interesting, entertaining and wild ride, would be a complete understatement. Coasterfreak900's entry for example, gave us some tips on protecting ourselves from alien invasion with some high tech gear, while Dave Yankoviac, aka the Anywhereman went a little old school on us to say the least, complete with Gorilla glue holding his high-end gear together.  It's OK Dave, we won't tell Dell about that Mac look you've got going on you notebook there, honest, but you're probably going to make some folks in Redmond cringe with that one.

Regardless, even with all the wacky antics of folks like this (Manduh, if only you got Shatner in there, you would have been a shoe-in!), folks just couldn't quite compete with Phil Montero's mad video production skillz.  Congratulations Phil!  You're our lucky winner!  You've heard of a quad-core processor, sure, that's easy but feast your eyes on Quad-Phil!

Wow, Phil.  We think we need to get you in touch with a few folks at AMD or Intel.  Your multiplicitous ways might come in handy!  No, we're not going to get into what you might do with this capability in your personal life.  This is a family show, Phil.

At any rate, a big thanks to our friends at Viddler and to the folks at Cisco for sponsoring the Flip UltraHD pocket camcorder prize.  And thanks to all of you that participated in the contest!  We very much enjoyed your contributions and hope you all had a little fun in the process too!

Hey, Congrats.  I had a feeling that he would win.  I thought it was a rather clever idea to quad himself.

Wahooo! Thanks so much for choosing me as the winner and for hosting such a fun contest. I had a blast watching all the creative entries and learned some neat editing tricks in the process. Also thanks for creating an excellent Hot Hardware community - I'm enjoying all the articles/reviews and interacting with the other members.

I can't wait to start shooting video in HD with the Flip - I've heard such great things about that camera. Looks like it will be an HD xmas!!

Agreed, 3vi1! It was really hard to select a winner. Manduh had a great entry and there were a few others that were very entertaining! Phill drop me an email with your shipping info and phone number: davea@hothardware.com. I'll get the little feller out to you this week!

Gibbs, what is this Ion contest you're speaking of? The one NV hosted?

I especially liked the timing that Phil must have had to incorporate to make it come off as smoothly as it did. I imagine there were a lot of takes required to get that right.

It was a facebook/twitter/youtube contest from Nvidia. They were giving away 12 HP minis.

Agreed, I was thinking about that too! What program did you use to create the video, Phil?

Thanks everyone! As for how I did it - yes the timing was challenging (as was changing shirts 4 times - LOL). I basically did the initial longest take and then did a rough estimate at where the other "me's" should be coming in and how long each should talk. As you suspected I did about 5 or 6 takes for each one with my eye on the clock up on my home office wall so I could try to time it right. I basically just let the camera roll and did the takes one right after the other figuring I could use whichever came out best and make it work in editing.

I use Sony Vegas 8 Pro for my video editing and learned some neat tricks that helped with this project. First off I learned to use the Pan and Crop feature to create the separate frames of me so I could size and position them where I wanted. Another trick that really helped was I found out that by holding the CTRL key and dragging the right edge of a video edit it basically added slow motion to the whole take. This was key as I was able to add a small bit of slow motion to help the 4 different cuts line up correctly but not enough that you noticed a distortion of movement or my voice.

I really like Sony Vegas for editing. It's one of those programs that offers so many features it can make your head spin - yet you can work with just a small set of features and they are fairly intuitive and easy to use. The beauty is that as I learn more about it I appreciate how much power and flexibility it really has!

I plan on moving to a Mac in the not too distant future so I'll probably find the same is true of Final Cut (although I might be able to use iMovie for most of what I do). Time will tell.

Thanks again for all the congrats and to Hot Hardware, Viddler, and Cisco for sponsoring the contest. I'll be sure to share some of the fun videos I shoot with the Flip once I get to playing with it! I'll be posting lots of them to my blog so be sure to come by and check it out at http://TheAnywhereOffice.com ! I look forward to connecting with you all here through the comments on Hot Hardware and the forums as well.

Phil, you may have to give me a lesson on green screen work with Sony Vegas, brother!

Sure thing Dave - haven't done that much of it yet - but I have played around with it and it's pretty straight forward.  Found some great tutorials online on sites like Viddler and YouTube helping me learn just about anything I wanted to know.  Also love Bill Myers DVD series which I purchased and helped me get up to speed really quick. But let me know what you are trying to do - would be happy to help!

I'm not sure how it compares, but you could also give Kdenlive a try.  It's worked well for what I needed on Linux, though I'm not a hardcore video guy like you fellows.
