For normal partition tasks, I just use qtparted from any LiveCD.  I think Knoppix has it installed by default, so you don't even need to remaster.

If you want a great tool for recovering deleted partitions/files, check out the (totally free) TestDisk utility.  I used it on a dual-boot Linux/WindowsXP box where Windows had trashed grub, and the guy fixing it had subsequently deleted the Windows partition.  It was able to fix it all.  It was easy to run from a LiveCD too - but there are native Windows versions in case you want to run it from Windows or Mac recovery disks.
