Although still in its infancy, data loss prevention softwareis becoming increasingly important for companies who wish to protect theaccidental and intentional release of sensitive information. To assist, Sophosintroduced free programs that will prevent sensitive data from getting outsideof corporate firewalls. In a move that will take on products sold bycompetitors Symantecand McAfee, Sophos plansto offer its data-loss prevention program for no charge to customers whopurchase the company's anti-virus programs.

Sophos, the world's biggest privately held maker of securitysoftware, hopes to boost sales of its anti-virus software forboth business and personal computers with the offering. Jefferies and Coanalyst Katherine Egbert believes the company could be on the right track totaking sales away from Symantec and McAfee, at least initially. "Peoplemight want to try something for free before they buy a paid product," shesaid.

This is the second free incentive program Sophos haslaunched in the last month. In September, the company formed a partnership withHP to distribute its antivirus software with HP's high-end Integrity server.

A smart move by Sophos, I could see this type of aggressive marketing and value for their services. This types of strategy seems to be well conceived to get them some of McAfee's and Symantec's market share.
