You know how we're rather enamored with anything to do with Solid State Disk technology around here these days.  There are so many new, ground-breaking concepts coming to market lately, that we almost don't know where or what to dial our radar on next.  One product that has definitely set off a few pings on our SSD-watch screens is OCZ's upcoming Z-Drive PCI-Express-based SSD.   Early incarnations of the product looked a little, how shall we say, "proto-ish" but today the Z-Drive has re-appeared and it's looking significantly more polished...

OCZ Z-Drive PCI-Express Solid State Drive
  • Available in 250GB (256), 500GB (512), and
  • 1TB (1024GB) capacities
  • 256MB Local Cache
  • Onboard RAID Controller
  • PCI-Express interface (x4)
  • For use as primary boot drive or data storage
  • 250GB Max Performance:
  • Read: Up to 774MB/s
  • Write: Up to 646MB/s
  • Sustained Write: Up to 600MB/s
  • 500GB Max Performance:
  • Read: Up to 878MB/s
  • Write: Up to 761MB/s
  • Sustained Write: Up to 600MB/s
  • 1TB Max Performance:
  • Read: Up to 878MB/s
  • Write: Up to 781MB/s
  • Sustained Write: Up to 600MB/s
You can bet we'll be taking a look at the product in the near future and if real-world performance is anywhere near these specifications above, we're going to be smiling ear to ear in the lab.  Price tag?  No details yet but you can bet it ain't cheap.

Drool indeed! This was the subject of an earlier HotHardware sneak peek, and at the time people noticed that it was listed at Amazon. It still is, but with the note "This unit ships in 1 to 3 months." The picture at Amazon is more like the prototype that was announced in April.

Umm... I don't need to speed up World of Warcraft THAT bad. Fortunately these are eligible for FREE Super Saver shipping!
