Free stuff is hard to beat, wouldn't you agree? It's been a little while since we've cleaned out the closets here and offered up a sweepstakes, but we felt the time was right for another one. Today, we're offering up a 2.5" Seagate Momentus 5400.5 80GB hard drive, which should slot perfectly in that notebook you're repairing/building, or in that external drive you've been meaning to fill. We’ll be giving away this drive to a randomly selected contributor to our on-line forum and discussion systems. The full specifications list is below:

The Seagate Momentus 5400.5 drive offers the best combination of capacity, mobility and durability in a laptop hard drive to meet the demanding requirements of today's notebook multimedia usage models. Built with proven Seagate perpendicular recording technology and able to withstand up to 1000 Gs of shock, this highly reliable 2.5-inch drive is perfect for notebook or external storage applications.

  • 8-MB cache delivers fast performance.
  • Robust design and high shock tolerance enable mobility in rugged notebook operating environments.
  • 1000 Gs of nonoperating shock make the drive ideal for notebook PCs and industrial applications.
  • G-Force Protection™ available for added robustness in mobile environments
  • Green features:
    • Leverages Seagate laptop power management technology, delivering the lowest-power 5400-RPM laptop hard drive yet
    • Utilizes ramp load features that remove the head from the disk during idle periods, improving idle power consumption and adding to the durability of the drive
  • QuietStep™ technology enables ultra-quiet load/unload acoustics.
  • SATA 3Gb/s Native Command Queuing interface
    • Best-Fit Applications

  • Mainstream laptops
  • External storage solutions/boxes
  • Whitebooks
  • Industrial applications requiring a smaller form factor
  • Perpendicular recording technology
To be entered into the sweepstakes, you’ve got to be a registered, active member of our forum and a resident of the United States. If you’re not already a member, you can sign up quickly and easily (and for free), right here.

From this point forward, we’ll be monitoring discussions on the site and will be randomly selecting a winner based on community involvement and contribution. To increase your chances of being a winner, sign up for our HotHardware RSS News Alerts and we'll toss your name into the mix for double credit! The sweepstakes will run until July 22, 2009. Best of luck!

For sure. Drop it in a spare drive bay for backup/expansion. Momentus is a good notebook drive line and speedy.

Tru tru, Bob! Never thought of it that way but you're right! Just gotta find a place to mount it, though I think it would make for a spiffy notebook upgrade.

you can also get an excellent brushed metal sata to usb enclosure about the size of the passport drives that needs no external power on newegg for less than 20 bucks. I got an "internal" drive and the enclosure still beat the price for my backup drive and its worked fantastic so far!

Cross fingers! A blind friend was looking for an external drive for his music. If he ripped all his CDs he'd have 40 GB, so this would be perfect for him-- and I'd spring for a decent case. We've been looking around but 80s seem to be a thing of the past, and even a 320 would just go to waste (plus this one would not require external power).

I did this operation with my old Powerbook drive and wound up with a very nice 20 GB external, so good luck to all!

Woo hoo! Kevin (the Braille proofreader) is a gadget freak as am I, and I called him just after Dave emailed me. This should serve his music needs quite well indeed, so a big thank-you to the staff at HotHardware!
