LOOK OUT!

In a development that's almost too silly to be true, a New York City teenage girl evidently fell down an open manhole as she walked down the street, distracted because she was...texting. MyFOX NY reports Alexa Longueira was strolling down a Staten Island sidewalk and was fiddling with her phone, preparing to send a text, when she disappeared down an open sewer access duct.

Longueira is said to have suffered mild cuts and bruises, but she should be just fine. Workers told the girl's mother they left the manhole open and unattended for mere seconds as they went to grab some pylons from their trucks. The Department of Environmental Protection announced an investigation.

Mercedes Padilla, of the DEP, was quoted as saying: "DEP is conducting a full investigation of what happened during a manhole incident on Victory Boulevard where workers were flushing a high-pressure sewer on Wednesday evening. We regret that this happened and wish the young woman a speedy recovery."

In an astonishing (not) twist, the family plans to sue. Apparently it doesn't matter that the girl was texting and not paying attention to her surroundings; the dangerous duct should have been covered.

The moral of the story? Look where you're going, dummy!

My favorite part is the lawsuit.

"On what grounds do you bring action against the city of New York?"

"Uh...I wasn't lookin' where I was goin'."

The funny thing is, they're going to win the lawsuit. Even if she was drunk, blindfolded, listening to an iPod, and walking backwards, the sewer workers shouldn't have left the manhole open and unattended, even if it was only for a few seconds.

Wow,  5 feet down.  That will probably cost about 1 million dollars a foot.

In the beginning of the video the girl says. "It was a stupid mistake and I got hurt." I think maybe the stupid mistake was not looking were the hell she was going. If this had happened to me my parents would have laughed at me and told me to hose off before coming inside.

I love how the FOX report made such a big deal out of it. "Medical bills are mounting, and Alexa lost one shoe.."

Seriously? What kind of medical bills would you get for some cuts and bruises? I guess you'd probably have to get a tetanus shot and some antibiotics to make sure the sewage didn't leave a nasty infection, but that shouldn't cost that much? I really don't know, I'm Canadian. :)

You're Canadian? Oh THAT explains it! We have sky high medical bills here and are not on the socialistic plans. We have SO much money left over from not paying taxes for the socialistic medical services that we actually CAN pay those medical bills.... Of course falling down a manhole is another ball of wax! We don't have manhole coverage here eh!?! uh, yeahhhhh, that's it. I think.

So they wanna sue, huh? This kind of scenario is what our court system is designed to decide! Let the lawyers duke-it-out and award the booty. Jurrors with common-sense would award the girl and her lawyer about 1 cent!

The parents should consider themselves lucky she didn't walk into traffic instead.

Even if there had been bright orange cones, she could have walked right through them. It's her fault; The only reason to sue would be greed.  The world is not responsible for babysitting your child, and you're not teaching her any responsibility by suing.
