If your Windows 7 Beta experience has been a bit rough so far due to unfriendly graphics drivers from NVIDIA, the company is finally stepping up with a solution. Today, NVIDIA has made available new graphics drivers from its website that apply to GeForce GPUs involved in Windows 7 Beta setups. This also marks the start of regular NVIDIA driver updates for the forthcoming operating system from Microsoft. Needless to say, NVIDIA is pretty excited that Win7 will be the first Windows OS to fully integrate and take advantage of the GPU for both graphics and parallel computing, as it's currently attempting to convince the world that GPUs are really the CPUs of the future. Or something to that effect, anyway.

Ujesh Desai, vice president of GeForce desktop business at NVIDIA, had this to say about the releases: "Since its release last month, the Windows 7 Beta has been eagerly tested by hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GeForce owners, who are excited about the many graphical improvements Microsoft has added into the upcoming operating system." Dwight Diercks, vice president of software engineering at NVIDIA, added the following: "Our customers are demanding an experience that is faster and more visual, and with the addition of many new GPU-accelerated features, including DirectX Compute, we believe Windows 7 will be well positioned to meet those needs."

GeForce version 181.71 graphics drivers, which were loaded up today for download, support the new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) v1.1 from Microsoft. These drivers also offer increased performance and reliability in both 2D and 3D applications, including the 3D Windows Aero desktop. Are the DirectX compute features for DirectX11 included in the Win7 beta? Is DirectX11 beta included in the Win7 beta (beta within a beta?)?

Is anything out there using DirectX Compute instructions at this point?

Nothing solid. Just figure most companies will wait till its out of beta.
