When installing windows(any version)for the 1st time on a brand new hdd, do you do a full format so chk dsk can scan for bad sectors or quick format and just trust that the new hardware worx out of the box?

I would like to hear from ppl regarding their method.

On a brand new HD I always do a full format. If a HD is going to die on you it will be very early or years later.

I am going to go against the grain here and say that I just do a quick format....

I regularly back up my data anyway so if the drive fails, so what? I have a 5yr warranty on it right? I am just usually too excited to get the fresh install done so I can start tweaking and overclocking and such. Smile

ANd on that note -- if there were to be a bad sector or two, there is always sector repair that would get me running right

Tell that to Western Digital. I'm sitting on a drive that worked for 3 or 4 months and died. Its a retail drive that I got from best buy. WD claims its out of warranty and they wont replace it.Angry

Best Buy honors mfg warranties my good man -- just get them to find your receipt (if you didn't pay cash) and tell the geek squad your drive crashed. The agent can pull up a system called "RSS" to verify the mfg warranty. Since a HDD is not servicable (i.e. geek squad can't send it to a repair center) then best buy honors WD's warranty by replacing the drive for you in store.

If you have issues with it tell them you talked to Senior Agent Ryan from Store 12 in Minnesota Wink

Thanks I'll do that some time this week. Its not a huge deal now because i have that 1TB drive, but at the time it had all my games on it and I didn't have room to store them on my windows drive. Just left a bad taste in my mouth for WD. I just dug out the drive and it was built on Nov 11, 2006
