 Hello

So I recently tried my first boot up on my new desktop. All the fans started up but didnt hear any beeps and nothing appeared on the monitor except for No Signal message. So i checked all the connections and the cords but I get the same response. The monitor is connected by a VGA cable into an adapter (which came with the video card) and then into the back of the card. The card is plugged in as with everything else I believe. My rig is as follows

Acer X223WBD Black 22IN Widescreen LCD Monitor 1680X1050 2500:1 5MS VGA DVI HDCP

Try to reseat your video card. After that pull all but 1 stick memory and try. If still nothing it sounds like you may be grounded to your case. Take it out of the case and put it on say the motherboard box with a static bag and try it and see if it posts. Good luck

Put them back in one at a time and run memtest on each. You might have a bad stick of ram.

Hi

So I have some developments; the computer appears to run fine until i turn it off. Once its off (or rebooting) it wont display anything on the screen (yet fans and lights go on) until i wait and try again in a few hours. So I generally have to wait over night if I want to reboot or such. The case is an Antec 9000 so cooling is good; the 4870 is 52C (which is normal i read), and CPU is 31C-36C across all four. So all looks good and decent i believe. I have also moved to just using one stick of RAM

So any ideas on a cause?

Thanks

Have you put it all together outside the case to see if that fixes it?

I shall try a bios update, its just that i'm worried about screwing that up. Another symptom - it just went blank and stopped displaying when i was reading a website, but the computer was still on and all. So now i have to wait a few hours until it will restart :(

Do you have another PSU you could try? It might be a power problem. If its that unstable then hold off on the bios update.

And rightfully so, Kythoon, as BIOS updates are always risky! Mess-up a BIOS update and your motherboard can become useless. If it boots, even just sometimes, it is unlikely that a BIOS update will fix the problem, IMO. Since it works fine if you let it set for a while, I am inclined to think it may be a thermal issue.

Unfortunately i dont have another PSU to use - but could this one be bad? It is new and from a good company. But ya, scared about flashing now since of power issues. Can a computer "turnoff" automatically when it gets too hot? Not that it is getting hot, but it might explain it.

Most PC parts fail right away or years later. If a computer gets to hot it will cut itself off. What are you using to monitor temps? Might wanna try resetting the cpu cooler.

A variety of programs; Core Temp, and HWMonitor. How do i reset the cpu cooler? Unplug it?

I'll see if i can find another psu to try out

Take it off the cpu and reset it. How are your nothrbridge temps? Might try taking the side of the case off and setting a fan right in front of it.

You say your PC runs fine with the old VGA card pluged in the slot? Or does it still doing funny things? If it acts normal then i would say its either a Power problem, mostlikley not enohg power supplies on the Vrails or the new VGA card has heationg problems. But i would be more inclined to say its a power issue since you have yet to say any thing about artificats on the screne. I read that only one of you RAM modules work? have you tired moving the slots on them to see if they all work? If all the ram works and you are having the problems then i would say that its the MOBO and to RMA it.

About the VGA, I removed the fan from the 4870 originally but i reconnected it too see if the card was getting power and it is. And there are no artifacts on the screen. The RAM was having issues because the mobo is not setup for dual channel I believe, so there in only 2GB atm in there. I'll have to flash it to make it dual I think.

I stopped in Canada Computers today to pick up MS 2007 and I asked about my computer. And they also think its a PSU problem; so i might buy a new one since the retailer for this one is across the country and i dont want to wait that long if its not a problem.
