Safe operating temps for a T5450?

I have been searching Google for weeks, and have not found anything but laptop ads. I am also not sure if this is the right sub-forum... mods feel free to move it if needed.

I have an Asus F5VL laptop, with a T5450 CPU. Since I first installed Speedfan, I have been worried about its temps. When running on battery, it idles in the low 50's (celcius). But when plugged in, it jumps to the low 60's. The jump is not unexpected, but the temps are. This seems REALLY hot, especially when my old laptop never broke 45 (though it was an old P3 based Dell Latitude). I was playing GTA:SA last night, and my temps peaked around 75 and stayed in the low 70s the whole time I was playing. I have a fan-pad underneath, and it dropped the temps about 2 degrees, and I have the back end of the laptop rested on a stack of DVDs to improve airflow, but I am still afraid of frying my laptop. I dont know too much about cooling for them, but this one seems to have a weird heatsink. Instead of a fan directly on or near the CPU, it has a curved copper bar running over it, which I think is then cooled by a fan on the edge of the case. This is all from memory, so the details my be wrong, but you get the gist (I hope). Should I be worried about it much? Are these temps normal? Of not, how can I drop them?

Oh yeah also when I was playing GTA, the heat seemed highest when I was flying down the highway out in the country. Even though the game had been playing alright earlier, here it started to get choppy, but not as if there were frames missing. There was a rythmic lag, and I was starting to suspect that maybe it was a sign that the CPU was getting too hot and starting to cut out. Once I stopped going so fast, the lag diminished (draw distance, though set really low, might have been the culprit here).
