We’ve said it before, but crime just doesn’t pay folks:

“Barry Gitarts, 25, of Brooklyn, New York, was convicted Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.  In addition to up to five years in prison, Gitarts could face a fine of US$250,000, three years of probation and a requirement that he make full restitution, the DOJ said.

Gitarts was a key member of the Internet music piracy group Apocalypse Production Crew (APC) from at least June 2003 through April 2004, the DOJ said. Gitarts paid for and administered a computer server located in Texas that APC group members used to upload and download hundreds of thousands of copies of pirated music, movies, software and video games, the agency said.”

We wonder if the inmates on his cell block will think that the name APC is cool, or perhaps just ‘cute.’

That sucks, it is really making me think twice about downloading some stuff. But hwo can afford $1 per song and software prices are going up,and then we got gas prices almost hitting $4.00 per gallon. What can a person do.

It could happen to anyone! I really believe someone out there with a lot of money needs to make a system where they don't profit and we are buying songs at a kind of wholesale price. After all I refuse to buy actual Cd's or DVD's just because the technology to download is there and it will save wacting valuable elements such as trees! If only more people had the same opinion!

If somehow the software and digital media industry managed to stop piracy, The open software movement would really take off.

It's impossible to stop piracy.  There will always be free ways to get music on the interweb because it's such a basic thing (merely a small several MB file).

Lol, this is probably the funniest joke I heard today. You made my day Super Dave! That's what I was thinking too. But yeah, whenever you do something illegal, you never know when you get cought. It might not be right aways, just like in 10 years. It's creepy!

What ever, it's inevitable, people will always find a way to share and copy music, movies, and software.

Wow. Am I the only one who sees that the punishment does not fit the crime? A "key" member in a music piracy group who was alleged to be active less than a year by paying for a server that music, movies, and software was uploaded to and downloaded from by MEMBERS.

He is getting up to five years, three years probation, and paying $250,000 in fines. They are requiring him to pay the restitution in full. The restitution is $250,000. This guy is screwed for his entire life.

The ignorant cheer for this... Chad.

Obviously, with fines, prison, and probation terms as stiff as this it is a felony. So this poor *** is going to have to spend the rest of his life working close to minimum wage to pay off corporations that make BILLIONS of dollars every year.

Oh wait... I doubt this "restitution" is being distributed among the companies that were "harmed". Nope. It is being redistributed to Uncle Sam c/o the DOJ to research new ways of raping the citizens of this country of any semblance of real justice and freedom.
