GameStop, who’s core business is selling video games, has decided to stop selling Microsoft Zune media players after their current supply is exhausted.

"We have decided to exit the Zune category because it just did not have the appeal we had anticipated," said a GameStop spokesperson.  "It (also) did not fit with our product mix."  GameStop made the decision about a month ago.  GameStop said it will sell Zune players online until it clears out its inventory.

GameStop has hundreds of stores across the country and losing that distribution channel could hurt Zune sales.  Many of GameStop's customers are avid users of Microsoft's Xbox 360 console and could have presented a cross-selling opportunity for Microsoft.

A major retailer abandoning the Zune could signal that the Microsoft lineup of devices simply haven’t gained the traction needed to fight the well-entrenched iPod.

I saw this coming. It's like selling hair dryers in a PC shop. Just stick to what they know...games!

I think they were thinking in the best interest of the company. If zune had been the first ipod it would have taken off but as its not the sales were not as high as Microsoft were hoping, therefore stocking the zune is just a risk for gamestop!
