Asustek caused quite a stir with their inexpensive little Eee PC notebook computer. There's been a lot of speculation about the how when why wherefore of the second generation of the unit. According to Digitimes, you can expect an 8.9",  touchscreen equipped, 512 to 1GB memory-packing,  8 to 12 GB solid state hard drive wielding, $500 unit in May or June of this year.

The company aims to ship up to five million Eee PCs in 2008 through retail channels and contract orders combined, with quarterly retail-only shipments expected to total 650,000-700,000 units, according to the company. The device is seeing a 50% supply shortage in the Taiwan and Hong Kong regions and 70% worldwide in the first quarter of 2008.

They'll have a hyper-low priced desktop, called an E-DT, clocking in at $199 for release at the same time.  Be careful walking past Asustek's competitors' buildings in June. Executives might be pitching themselves out the windows.

Go ASUS! If they get a touchscreen version, I'll probably get it.

Let's just hope it's a GOOD touchscreen. For instance, the 8.9" touchscreen on the Fujitsu P1620 isn't that great, but the Dell XT Tablet's 12.1" touchscreen is excellent.

Not all touchscreens are created equally.

This blows away Intel's 2go PC, and for only $100 more. The touch screen is a nice touch, no pun intended. I'm surprised, they even throw in a SSD too. 5 million units in one year is pretty ambitious, but at such a low price I don't see any reason why they wouldn't sell so many.
