    Lost Planet

While this game is old news by now I just picked it up today and thought I'd share my experience with you guys. Despite some pretty low review scores I opted to buy it after enjoying the demo which I played the day it came out some months ago. The 1st thing that struck me is of course the graphics which are very good IMO. The textures are only so so at times, but the overall look of the game is very pleasing to the eyes. Decent character models and animations, some really good mech designs, excellent particle effects and physics, huge bosses and fairly large levels combine to create a visually engaging presentation. The game looks and feels very much like an anime feature which is a good thing in my book. The only thing that holds this game back is a generic story with bland, emotionless voicework. Sound overall is very good and completely lends itself to the immersion while smoke and debris often fill the screen completely as a result of booming explosions from rockets and huge creatures stirring beneath your feet. The game is kinda short and can be completed in a sitting or two, but is very intense and satisfying if mindlessly dumping round after round into savage insect like creatures and enemy soldiers thrills you. At the highest settings and with 4xAA enabled this game will give even monster gaming rigs a thorough workout. I feel that the $30 I paid was worth it and I'll play through it again at least once more. Haven't tried the mutliplayer component yet, but if I get around to it I'll update you with my impressions on it.

    My rating = 7(out of 10)

The creatures are a major part of the story in this game.

    Hi All,

I just got through with Bioshock which by the way is a Excellent game. I see why it won Game of the year. Between Call of Duty 4 Silent Hunter 4 & Battlefield 2 I don't see how I'll be able to fit it in. But I'll try

If you do get around to playing this game you won't likely be disappointed. The action is very intense and I constantly find myself in awe of the sheer amount of activity on-screen at once during battles... lots of explosions, smoke and particles make it impossible to see at times, but it's realistic and very cinematic in that sense! At 1680 rez. with all settings maxed and 4xAA, the framerate does border on unplayable at times dipping into the mid teens. This only occurs very rarely and the graphics look so good I don't want to compromise and turn anything down. Boss battles are truly epic IMO as well as challenging enough to make you wanna smash your keyboard lol!!!

^_^...Luckily my friends have this title. I'll ask to borrow it the next time I see/talk to him. Finally I'll have a system capable of plyaing these games =P...ATM I I've borrowed Crysis, The Witcher, and BioShock from some friends. The rig should be shipping out on monday =D...Once I get the system...the heavy gaming sessions will commense ^_^.

The only downside though is my monitor..It's a 19" CRT....coupled with a 8800 gt sli?..lol. Fortunately, my monitor supports 1600x1200 and does it well, tested it out on some older titles I have on my rig and it looked good and clear...So going to play on that res to take advantage of the SLI'ed 8800 GT's =D. Maxed out AA/AF and textures...ooohhh I'm sooooo giddy =D. Just a week or so left...::takes a deep breath:: =D.

I have Lost Planet for Xbox 360, and I never got too far in it.  It's okay, but frustrating getting knocked down all the time.  I guess I'll play it eventually, but it's nothing too great imo.

I hated the idea of having to constantly move around and get energy from enemies to stay warm.  I only played 10 minutes or so of the game, but this kind of gameplay doesn't suit me.  I always hate when a game makes you rush through an area.  I like to set my own pace.

    Re: Lost Planet

How much of the game actually involves this?

I am more of a Call of Duty / Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter kind of guy, so slow and methodical, so if your really have to run around like this, then it might be a deal killer.

I played it a little on DX9,and I can say that on my old computer, when the monsters appear on screen, the framerate drops under 10

I haven't played the PC version, but from what I understand it is very demanding on your system.

I'll put the performance in perspective for you guys.

I run the game on XP @ 1680 with all settings maxed with 4xAA and v-sync disabled. With a 3ghz C2D and a non OC'ed 8800 Ultra there are rare occasions where the framerate will drop to the mid teens. Luckily the game engine seems to be very solid and even when the fps is 15-20 range the game is still playable. Since the GUI puts the option to view framerates right in the menu I monitored it sometimes and would estimate that the average from start to finish(11 levels)is somewhere between 45-60 and it feels very smooth(didn't notice any hitching).

I would say that qualifies this game as somewhat of a system slayer.

     Wow, thanks recoveringknowitall.

So it looks like I won't be playing this baby with AA, ohh well, at least I can play it at my native res, 1680x1050.
