Hi All,

I have developed a problem which is perplexing me. Yesterday (during a boss level in Doom 3 - not that this is relevant), my PC just died. No shutdown, it just died. I have opened the case and the mobo power LED is on, but there is no power.

I have stripped all of the components out, but there is still nothing. The chipset fan does even not spin. I am thinking either a mobo issue or a PSU issue, but, since the mobo power LED is on, I am stuck with which one to replace. Any ideas?

System info: Asus A8N Deluxe Mobo, AMD socket 939 3500+, two sticks Aeneon 512MB RAM, x2 Geforce 6800GT SLi

Thanks in advance!

It might be a RAM problem,  It wont boot at all? try taking one stick out and just booting with one at a time and in different slots.

 Hi All,

FSimms, you'll have to test your power supply to see if it's the problem. To do this you'll have to remove the power supply from the case.

Then plug the unit back into the wall socket and connect a couple hard drives to a molex connector to provide a load.

Now with the switch on the back of the power supply in the off position locate the Dark Green wire in the ATX connector and using a paper clip (or something similar) "jump it" to any of the black wires in the connector. Now flip the switch on the back to On the power supply should start up and run.

Hi,

Der Meister, I stripped the whole system down to only the mobo. There is absolutely nothing when I hit the 'on' switch. I even skipped the on switch and bridged the power switch pins on the mobo. I have tried one RAM stick, in each slot as you suggest and still nothing. That green power LED on the mobo is a tease!!!

jtm55, I tried what you suggested and there is no change in the HDD condition; the disk doesn't spin up at all. It sounds like the problem has been diagnosed from this, I guess.

I have ordered a new PSU from Ebuyer - delivery tomorrow. I'll come back and let you know if this solves it...

Thanks a lot!

 Afternoon all,

Having just read the previous posts its seems i am in a similar situation. I say similar as the fans on the CPU and Graphics card do work, which leads me to think it maybe the processor?..

 The Problem
Turn computer on - fans on both the cpu and graphics card work - green light on the front comes on and stays, but so does the red light for the hard drive. (no blinking)

not sure if i can hear the HD - but there is no friendly beep, oh and the CD drive light also stays on (but will not open)

and thats how it stays if i leave it for a number of minutes. Have left for 24 hours with everything disconnected but to no avail...

I am gonna guess its one of either the PSU/CPU/Motherboard

So i am hoping someone will have more knowledge of the situation? - or point me in the right direction

Thanks in advanced - find what specs i know below...

MoBo - ASRock P4VX4 socket 478
CPU - P4 478 2.66
RAM - 2 DDR = 1.5GB (recently put extra 1GB but has ran ok for a few days prior)

if you need more info just let me know.. thanks

From other forums it was suggested to take out all RAM and start it where i should then hear a number of beeps...this did not happen so am now running out of ideas of how to isolate the problem.

 Thanks for any help..

 Gav

 Hi All,

Gav, try resetting the CMOS. To do this you'll either have to remove the Flat battery from the Motherboard, or you may have to reset some Jumpers on your Motherboard. Your Motherboard Manual will tell you how. In addition was there any Overclocking done?

Hi jtm55 - thanks for the quick response...

Ok took the flat battery on MoBo out and replaced after a few minutes.

Where you explained about to "reset some Jumpers on your Motherboard", was this to clear CMOS? tried this as well and still no change

Just to give a bit more background
Recently could not start computer due to a "system32" file missing - winXP disc would not run as "aha154x.sys" currupt... so tried swapping hard drives to see if i could use the recovery console.
Needless to say it did not work and i have now put everything back to the previous setup (inc slave for 2nd HD) and the computer will not start...

Hope there are still some ideas - wondering if i have 'shorted' something?

Thanks again

 Gav

Have also been informed about POST cards? wonder whether this could be the way forward? seen them on ebay for £10-£12

 Hi All,

Try removing your components from the case. Place your Motherboard on a Non Conductive surface. Then connect only your Processor,Power Supply  1 Stick of Memory,Video card & see if you can Post. If so, then add 1 component at a time.
