    P4 3.2 vs AMD 64x2 2.4?

Well I'm still kinda new to the whole duel core thing I currently have a P4 3.2 and i am thinking of upgrading? How much faster is the 64x2 2.4 compared to a single core 3.2 to me it seems like a step down but every one is telling me its like running 2 2.4s so is it all most the equivalent to a 4.8 if their was such a thing?

Well,i have a question for you(2 to be honest, but i start with this one...) are you "ok" with your present mo-bo?(plus tell me what mo-bo you have...) If you are ok with current mo-bo,you must stay on the "Dark Side"(Intel),and you must for the price drops(in aboout a week they start price drops for both sides),so you can buy a E6600/Q6600(it worth the cost to buy the second, but the first thing u must know is that E6600 fullfill every requirment of an entry level user) SECOND question:You have any idea, how works the "dual core" system, gennerally i mean,i don't except to explain me the entire architect...if u answer me the second question,be sure, you will totally understand the power of a 64x2 in addittion with the power of a P4 3,2

If The Amd is faster i was planning on changing motherboards (I'm not completely stupid) What I'm truly looking to do is build a emulation computer i know most of the newer games run a bit sluggish on my 3.2 ( the vicard is probably the problem) this is why i am looking for a speed comparison (id hate to build a new machine with a better vidcard but a slower cpu) iv been on the intell single cor side since forever and kinda missed all the news letters for the duel core era but it seems every time i jump on something like a 2.5 intell core duo its slower and much crud compared to my P4 3.2 so maby i need to go with a 3.4 Pentum D over clock it a little and buy an huge ac unit with a heat sink the side of a Buick?

If you go from your P4 system to a Core 2 one and you say it is slower... yeah it has nothing to do with the CPU's. The Core 2 trounces the P4. What is more important is that the entire system is well rounded. It doesn't matter what your CPU is if there are bottlenecks. Usually emulation is heavily CPU dependent. The Core 2 or X2 chips will be faster than your P4 for sure but also take into consideration that other parts of your computer might be your bottleneck, not just the CPU.

do the programs you use support dual core

    Re: P4 3.2 vs AMD 64x2 2.4?

Applications are tending to switch to multithreading. Not many can take handle of 4 coures, but 2 cores is becoming much more common. BUT...Don't think that just because a program isn't multithreaded that you'd be wasting money. Having more cores means you can multitask more...You could be encoding a video with one core and be playing a game on the other.

Also..don't think that process speed is everything..considering you think a 3.2 p4 woud be slower compared to a athlon x2 @ 2.4 ghz. It's all abou the architecture that defines the performance. I'm on a 3.2 prescott also, and I'll tell you righ tnow, a allendale for around 70 bucks would rape my cpu, and it's clocked around 1.8 ghz. Try not to confuse clock speed with these new architectures. You can only compare clock speed to the same family of line, when it goes to a different architecture, the performance will be vastly different.

It would appear some people believe they will win this months prize based soley off post count, while ignoring quality. I have noticed quite a few posts from several of the same members that serve no real purpose in the threads other than to raise their own post count.

***No ice91785 I certainly wasn't implying you were one of the people. I am not trying to be overly critical of peoples posts, but I enjoy having valid discussions with people and get a little irritated by all the comments lately from various users that are bordering on SPAM.

I have noticed the same trend....but what are you going to do hm? Hopefully you aren't considering me to be one of these users though Tongue Tied Haha but I guess the site is getting a lot more publicity which is definately a good thing for Davo and Woppy (and other admins) -- more publicity = more $$, more $$ = more giveaways! (hopefully Wink

FRG1: no need to be so defensive buddy -- if you feel you are one of the users AjayD is talking about, rather than you two flame at each other (not that you are), just prove him to be wrong by upping the quality posts (again IF you feel he is talking about you).

Last, no one is going to boot ya for bumping an old thread but as they say, we learn from our mistakes -- general forum "rules" (I use the term loosely) basically say that you shouldn't swear, flame, bump threads (over say...a month old), and double/triple/++ post (use the edit button if you forgot to say something rather than posting a new reply). Regulars are guilty of it once in a while too so don't worry if you forget once or twice. MOST important rule --> HAVE FUN HERE!!!
