I think it might actually come true this time. Has anyone else seen these reports, I know your going to say old new but check the computer news sites again. Apparently Jobs announced it. Apple news
This raises my question I posted a while back. Are Macs becoming PCs. Before you shout at me. Think about it. Slowly Apple is becoming less of a platform. What next Windows on Apple? ATI make graphics cards for Apple high end hardware and now Intel CPUs. The distinction between Mac and PC isn't as clear.

They did use IBM. I put this up about a month ago when it was rumours and everyone laughed at me

Why not go for an AMD chip as everyone knows that AMD's architecture currently is ahead of Intels. Lets hope Intel improves for Apple's sake

Would they be using a CPU made for their instruction sets? I don't think they'd be using a x86 CPU.

Would be designed just for the stuff they need to do.

Good question Version1, if longhorn holds up to it's hype we may well see Apple just blend into PCs and they could well just be like Microsoft making operating systems and hardware for PCs. It may be a long shot in theory but really, if you laughed at Elsparrow last time he posted the suggestion (only two weeks ago)of the rumour and now it's been announced as true, what else can change in the next two years? It doesn't - to me at least seem so far fetched.

Apple has always had an x86 version of OSX ever since the early days of the opperating system. The real trouble is going to be with the applications that were written to take advantage of the PPC will need rewritten or at least revised to work with the Pentium Macs.

Also despite using the x86 architecture cpu's Apple intend to still produce software and hardware that can't be used on other pc's e.g not allowing anything of theirs to be used under Windows.

One of my friends still thinks that MACs are superior, which I think is funny because XP is so much better (from the gaming side of me anyways). I use this little event as evidence for Windows' Superiority. =)

I don't know if you could say that WIN XP is better than MAC OSX. XP is better for gaming, but MACs are not ment for gaming - they are ment for media creation.

What you can say from this is that perhaps x86 based processors are better than PPC based processors.

In my opinion you can't really compare the two completely, as you can't run them on the same hardware. You would then have to just use comparably priced hardware, and then you could just say that apple overprices their hardware, etc.

It does seem wierd to me how they slowly move away from uniqueness, such as going to intel's chips (obviously the IBM ones weren't made by them, but they were _different_ at least), and earlier switching to the unix core.
What would _you_ do with an asylum of penguins?

My theory is that this is mostly about ibm's inability to get a laptop acceptable g5 within what, 2 years, or the g5 launch?

Apple has spent lots of time and pr dissing intel over the years so why didn't they go with AMD? AMD is currently the clear tech leader in both servers and in the desktop arenas...but it's the laptops where even the turion still isn't quite up the par with the pentium m chip lines.

To me, that's the big cincher.

I heard they are used for more media things like graphical editing and stuff like that.
