I havent been online for a little while been a little Sick but just got to a friends house got a couple pictures to post! Recently I got a gift from Tanka who I want to thank very much.He donated me a Cool IT Domino water cooler for my rig which I have installed and even so I havent made it to my goal of 4 ghz I have installed it and wanted to show Tanka it was being put to good use. Also I have upgraded my Bios from stock 0705 to a couple of new ones which Im testing both of them and those are 1005 and 1202. So Im planning on if it is obtainable with my current specs: hitting that 4 ghz barrier this week. So all I,ve got now is some pictures of the Cool IT installed and due to the bios flash Im able to also show you a 4 core Phenom II x3 Be 720!!!! Since this is by stock a 3 core CPU I thought you might find this interesting so It might take a couple of post to get them all in so Im gng to try. Tell me what you think! Most of all Thanks Tanka for such a nice gift and I,ll post some temp graphs later!!!

Blue Wilhelm: Clem's new rig

As many of you know, I've been shopping for a new computer. My old one is ...well, it's never run well, and it's given me a distaste for Asus and nVidia products. Its K8U-X motherboard supposedly supports SATA, but I found that I had to have a PATA drive to hold the boot record, since the weird driver methodology wouldn't allow the SATA drive (though visible in the BIOS) to work until they ran as an executable program. Both Asus and nVidia (who made the controller via their ULI division) played the blame game when it came to finding drivers, so I decided not to give them any more of my money. But beside that, it supports all of 2 GB of memory; while perfectly adequate for Windows XP and Mac OS, it was a frustrating mess when it came to Vista and 7. And its AGP processor slot was just antiquated, even with a Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 installed in it.

I estimated that the technology was five years old, which is about the lifespan of a non-Apple PC. I had been adding to it slowly over the years, and could reuse considerable of Captain Clunker's peripherals and components. But really, I wanted to build this from the ground up-- my first complete system build-- to be a good midrange system that would have value over the next six years. Have I succeeded? We'll see in 2015.

I'll post concerning the process of building it, with pictures natch, but for now we'll have to be content with just a shopping list. That Radeon HD 5850 is still hard to find, at least at a non-usurious price; Amazon now charges $35 more for it than when I placed the order, so I'm not cancelling it to start waiting again for (say) a 5970!

A few notes on components:

Cooler Master HAF 932 case

I just loved the way it looks and the size and quantity of the fans. I also wanted a full-tower case so that I wouldn't have to strain to get new aprts into it, and so that it could hold anything I threw at it.

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R motherboard

Gigabyte has well-reviewed products, and this middle-of-the-line motherboard had the combination of price and the features I wanted. I am limiting myself in the choice of a single GPU setup, but with the new Radeon card, this likely won't be an issue.

Intel Core i7 860 CPU

Nothing against AMD (two of my systems have used their processors), but Intel's Core i7 is the cutting edge in performance. I decided on the 860 instead of the 920 somewhat arbitrarily, because there are good things to be said on each side; but I didn't see much of a real-world advantage to the triple channel memory of the Nehalem line, and I liked the speed adjustment of the Lynnfield.

Patriot 4 GB memory kit

Many writers say you don't need anything faster than 1333 MHz memory for the stock i7 860, but this will cover any future overclocking. I had my eye on a less expensive OCZ kit, rated at 8-8-8-24, which is average for that breed; but the extra $20 for the slightly improved timings seemed like it was worth it. (Amazon has since raised their price to $129, as has Newegg, so that was a good deal.)

OCZ Agility 60 GB SSD

I wanted an SSD for two main reasons: Speeding up the OS and speeding up World of Warcraft. It and Windows 7 will fit with room to spare, and I don't particularly care about whether other apps have to reside on the mechanical HD. The Agility is that comforting cusp of high speed and low price; Soupstyle, a reader here at HH, pointed me toward a rebate from TigerDirect that made their price the best (who'da thunk it? They seldom have the best prices for anything).

Prolimatech Megahalems, Noctua NF-P12 heat sink & fan

I actually agonized over this one, but the Megahalems seems always to get top marks, and Silent PC Review notes that the Noctua fan here has a considerably lower noise level at all speeds than competitors. It's not the highest in cubic feet per minute (CFM), but Prolimatech recommends that their heatsink be used with a 57 CFM fan, which is about what the NF-P12 puts out at maximum speed (1300 RPM) with an acoustical pressure of 19.8 dBA-- which is much quieter than most fans. Sidewinder.com had both for a good price. Yes, this is the Rev B, which has the LGA1156-compatible mount.

Sapphire ATi Radeon 5850

Back when I was initially designing the system, the 4890 looked like the card to get. Fortunately I'm a HH reader, and slurped down all they had to read on the new line of AMD's graphics cards. The 5850 represents that sweet spot of price and performance; tied to what many would consider a smaller monitor, my resolution needs aren't that great, and my favorite game (World of Warcraft) would consider this overkill. But remember, this design must keep me satisfied for at least six years-- I think the DirectX 11 support and feature set of the 58xx series will allow that. And if they don't, well, the GPU is the easiest thing in the case to replace. I chose Sapphire because I've had good experiences with them before, though I kind of wish I'd have waited for a VaporX version. Please do not pay attention to people who say that I chose it because I'm secretly in love with Agent Ruby. We're just good friends.

As for the existing components: I really love the Belkin Nostromo keypad, now sold in a slightly updated form by Razer. It's got the controls I need (although programming it is a bit clunky). The WD Caviar Green isn't there for power savings, though I suppose any power saved with that CPU and GPU is a good thing; no, it was merely the cheapest 1 TB drive I could find! But Western Digital has been a reliable choice for years now, and I've used their products in many projects with no complaints. I may have to get a TV tuner and fill up the space with timeshifted TV shows and videos, since at the moment Captain Clunker's lone HD has all of 60 GB stored on it. The older, smaller WD drive will be used for a dedicated OS drive backup.

(Why "Blue Wilhelm?" Well, my Macs are named Beige Victoria and Silver Victoria; my NAS is named Europa; and IBM was once called Big Blue. I use that color when it comes to Windows despite the tenuous connection between the IBM-PC and today's PCs. And Kaiser Bill #1 seemed to suit the Windows attitude more than, say, Abe Lincoln.)

So there you have it: Clem's New Rig! When work permits I'm going to mount the CPU and HSF onto the motherboard, while waiting for the GPU to come. Stay tuned!

OKOK.....last year I was laid off. I had just finished my rig prior to me being let go. I found a job but the first year required me to be out of town the first year. Now that part is over I have not paid much attention to what all is out there. As I look around and see the new i7's. I'm wondering how long I will be able to get away with what I have.

Too lazy to take pics, but she's pretty, I had to remove the top case fan to fit the PSU in, so the PSU's blue LED shines through the top and the front of the case also has some blue LEDs. I'm also using a G15 (revision 2) keyboard and dual-screening with my old 19" LCD. I should get another 24" Widescreen, they are beautiful, but my desk wouldn't fit it anyway. I love the Zero case. Windows on the side of a case look stupid to me. I'd rather a nice polished case than see the inerds (plus I don't really do cable management). The NZXT Zero features 4 120mm fans on the side instead of a window. She runs surprisingly quiet with all those fans, and keeps cool. I am still running stock heatsink/fan for my CPU/GPU aside from some Arctic Silver compound. The CPU is OC'd to 3.2GHz. I haven't bothered to OC the GPU yet. I will probably just wait a while and then step-up the card anyway.

Oh, and ignore the rest of my site. I haven't updated it in awhile and I never loaded all the pages -several are just copies of the main page- either despite finishing more than are live (yes I am that lazy- taking advantage of the MS Office Live website, so I don't pay anything for it, though my page URLs are not what I would like them to be). It was blank for over a year for lack of content and then even I got bored of what I started to put on there... Maybe someday I'll finish it or put something interesting on there. Maybe. The fact I can no longer get to my own website from work is discouraging though. Plus I don't play WoW much at the moment and am taking a break for awhile when my current subscription runs out.

I bult this rig in 2001 or whenver they come out with the slot a Athlon 700 mhz whew hot rod back then. Anyway I,ve got a lot of boring time on my hands and no money to work on my new one so I,ve come up with some decent idea to change the looks and the function of this 1st rig I ever modded so here is the before and in the near future you,ll se the after hopefully pictures and video of the whole process! I think it will blow your mind on the change!

Actually it wasnt bad for my 1st Mod! Considering the original out of box was a Inwin Q5000 Full Tower seen below!

Ok so I am finally getting around to overclocking my CPU. I honestly have been super happy with the stock performace and I still am. So anyway I still have the system I won here with a few minor changes

I have been working on overclocking for the last 2 days. This motherboard has turned out to be very finicky, but when you get the right settings it is a pretty good overclocker.

I just redid my watercooling and I have a aftermarket cooler on my northbridge. My stock load/idle temps are 32/32/34/34 and 40/40/41/42.

Anyway down to what you wanna see. A fresh install of Windows 7 and overclocking madness.

Old Rig gets a new home!

Hi Everyone!

I got my Scout yesterday so I decided to move the old comp into a new home. I haven't done any builds (or transfers) before so I'm really surprised I transferred the rig successfully :) It took from around 4 hours to complete the project because it was so hard to remove the components from the OEM case.

The Scout is a great case and I wish I could get some better hardware into it The only problems I have had is the tool-less expansion slot clip snapping when I was trying to open it (the plastic was so weak :[ ) and the top exhaust fan isn't working because the 4 Pin Molex is broken as one pin has came out of the plastic part. ( It's hard to explain, so I might put up a pic later)

Tell me what you guys think! I think it looks good for a first ever I also think the cable management I did was pretty good as the 300W Hyena PSU didn't give that much freedom to work with.

If only I had some REAL hardware to play around with...

New Build woes... :-(

Nothing ever goes smooth when it's your own build lol I'm assembled and dissassembled and repaired countless PC's for NO problems. But then when I finally have the chance to build my own... something goes wrong!

So I spec'd out a sweet system and ordered all of the parts. It's gonna have a Core i7 920, 6GB of Tripple Channel DDR3 1600, 2 SSDs in Raid 0, an 850w Corsair PSU, and a GTX295.

Well I chose the Coolit Domino A.L.C. because I read a lot of good reviews on it. I ran it outside of the case and it had no leaks. So I go to install it and the block is having a little trouble reaching the CPU and the lines for the coolant and really stiff. So I give it a little pressure and I got it to reach, got it all bolted down and thought I was in the clear.. I noticed the radiator was coming off the back a little bit so I gave it a gentle push and I hear "POP!" And I started to freak out. "Wtf was that?!" I don't see anything leaking but to be safe I pulled the radiator off the back and then I saw some of the fluid starting to leak out so I had to unbolt the thing as fast as I could so I could get it out of the case. 1 small drop(that I noticed) fell on to the MB. But I don't think it will cause a problem. I wiped it up. I took the cooler over to the sink to inspect it. I couldn't find any cracks so I figure maybe the hose came loose. So I unscrewed it and took the hose off and inspect it some more and still found no cracks. I tried putting the hose back on as tight as I could bolted it back down. I ran it outside of the case and it has a small leak. :-( So I called CoolIT support up and They said they will send me a new one but it will be 3-4 days unless I pay for better shipping AND I have to pay to ship the broken one to California :-( This sucks!

WEll i got a old computer about 5 years old I'm caught between upgrading or buyin new parts. How ever might upgrade as money is kinda low, what do you guys recommend. Also i want to over clock to get some more life out this system i got 2 fans back and side plus the heatsink is taht sufficent?

another question if i do decide to upgrade if thats the best ting... can i get a pci expres 2.0 will it work with my current pci slot?
