run an external display via HDMI and come with USB 3.0 ports. People who
have second thoughts of buying a laptop as their main pc may use a
product like this but as the author said you can get a beast of a laptop from maingear or other pc builders that can blow away some desktops.

RE: Lenovo Intros ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock

Now the question is will they work with other brands laptops. These docks sound really nice for someone who takes a laptop between home and work so they can just plug in when they get to work and go with their external mouse/keyboard and monitors. I like but $179 is a bit much for what I would use it for.

RE: Lenovo Intros ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock

Are external graphics becoming a thing now? The new ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock is a swanky looking device that's powered by DisplayLink and a DL-3900 Dual Head Graphics chip with integrated Gigabit Ethernet and Audio. According to Lenovo, it offers dual video connections (2xDVI), enabling multiple displays to be connected, as well as five USB 3.0 ports for peripheral expansion. One has to wonder how much use these things still have in a market of increasingly powerful laptops, but those who find it useful will be able to buy one starting May 15th for $180.

ThinkPad Laptop USB 3.0 Dock Enabled By DisplayLink USB Graphics Increases Connectivity and Expansion in an Ultra Small Package

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DisplayLink®, the leading provider of technology for virtual graphics and USB-connected computing, announces availability of the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock, powered by the DL-3900 Dual Head Graphics chip with integrated Gigabit Ethernet and Audio.

"Lenovo's latest ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock takes full advantage of the bandwidth offered under SuperSpeed USB to achieve exceptional graphics and video performance in an unprecedented form-factor," said John Cummins, VP of sales and marketing for DisplayLink.
