I went to Radio Shack and picked up a USB-PS/2 converter and to my surprise it was a active adapter. As soon as i pulged it into my laptop, Windows recognised it as a USB Human Interface Device. I paid $15 for this and i today found one for $5 at Frys. I bought it and this one seems to be a passive one.

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the two and what is the circuitary used inside.

I have another question....... This mouse GPS that i bought, has a software which works only with serial ports. The manufacturer sells a USB-PS/2 converter along with a USB-Serial Bridge driver s/w. Is it possible for me to mimic this somehow on my laptop with just a passive USB-PS/2 adapter. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advane

Sreekar

Bob needs help

Ok so I moved my computer and everytime it gets unplugged it starts up and shuts back down then reboots again telling me that the overclock was not stable and asking if I would like to load failsafe settings or boot as is. I always boot as is since it's not overclocked right now and I it works fine. This time it did that then loads up windows. I start to type my password and shuts off. Now it won't respond to the power button on the case or the motherboard and when I unplug it and plug it back in(or flip the psu switch) it cuts on for 3 seconds then off again.

I have reset cmos jumper, switched out memory one at a time(Even tried my old kingston sticks), reset CPU and northbridge coolers, and switched out graphics cards.

Logitech G7 Mouse help?

Hello all,

I'm having some issues with my cordless Logitech G7 mouse, actually. Weird, I know. lol.

Well, it's becoming more and more laggy and spits around. Instead of being a nice smooth mouse, like it's suppose to be and used to be, it like to jump around. Sometimes it's hardly noticeable, and other times I will move the pointer, and it won't respond til after a second or two, then it jumps to the spot where it's supposed to be.

I thought maybe it was a driver issue, but I've uninstalled the driver in windows. Then I thought maybe it was Logitech setpoint not working well with Windows 7. Then I thought it was iTunes causing a problem, but it started doing it even if iTunes wasn't open. I swapped it out with a different wireless Logitech mouse, and I didn't notice it.

So, I figure it's gotta be the mouse. But, before I go out and buy a new mouse, does anyone have any suggestions I should try to do?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
UnlikelyAura

Internet stops connecting after several hours...

Hello,

The problem I have is when on the internet after several hours my connection seems to stop. I am using latest mozilla browser. Windows XP updated to current. I can select the file and goto File (in the toolbar, same list as in right clicking) and everything is okay. It wouldn't bother me so much as this also happens randomly when installing applications (normally Wise install wizards, usually I delete the folder and retry install and it works fine).

To rid myself of the problem though I completely re-installed windows, which didn't change anything. I reset the CMOS, changed the IDE cable order, and switched the plug it was plugged into, etc... still nothing.

There was another Hard-disk I had installed which I formatted... (Files I tried to *run* off there would lock up my computer) of which I could right-click again just fine. I'd rather not have to format my main disk again with this hard-drive (yes I did a clean reinstall).

I ran CHKDSK, Scandisk, Registry Mechanic... nothing turned up either. And I know there has to be a way to fix this. Although I can't tell if it's a hardware or software issue. Even though I reinstalled Windows :-P.

I currently run AVG Free anti-virus which hasn't turned up anything either.

I still haven't tried using a PS2 mouse yet. I'm currently using a Logitech infra-red laser mouse.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Trying to diagnose general slow performance of my PC, not sure where to start!

Hi,

I've just joined these forums - I built my own PC about a year and a half ago. I spent quite a bit of money on it, but I've been feeling constantly let down by it's performance. I thought the lack of performance was due to stuff clogging it up, so I have formatted fully in the past which did improve matters a little. Its probably around 7-8 months since I last formatted.

I ran 3d Mark benchmarking tool yesterday, and it drew a graph of my PC versus similar spec'ed PCs. They were about 60^ of the distance up the scale, and my PC was RIGHT at the poor end of the scale.

Now, 1 problem I do have is I have a 64bit processor, 4gb RAM but only a 32bit OS. I'm going to get a copy of Windows 7 64 bit soon, so that will address that particular issue. Another issue may be overheating - my CPU temp sits at around 50 Celcius, but i'm not sure what it peaks at when running games etc.

I was wondering if anyone could suggest any bottlenecks my system may be experiencing? My specs are below:

Mobo MSI AM2 K9NSLI-2F
CPU AMD AM2 D-Core 6400 Black Edition (3.2Ghz/core)
RAM 2x Matched Pair Corsair TwinX 1GB DDR2 6400 C4 (of which 2Gb are being addressed)
Gfx Card 512M BFG 8600 GT
HDDs 1x 500Gb SATA, 1x 300Gb SATA

Just to put the 'poor performance' in to perspective. My system boots to the Windows login screen very quickly. When I login it then takes around 8mins to properly load everything up and start behaving normally. I can then cause system lag just by loading a few different applications - a few Firefox tabs (with Firebug and various other plugins - i'm a web developer).

Thanks for any help anyone can offer me on tracking my issues down and fixing the buggers!
Cheers,
Dave

Machine Not Powering Up

Okay,

I gave my rig to my mate for a few months (I wasn't using it), I get it back today and the thing isn't powering up.

I know the power supply is receiving power and providing it to the motherboard because one of the LEDs on the motherboard is on.
So in my car I have a head unit - Pioneer DEH-P4000UB which reads music from my USB flash drive.

In any given folders I would have tracks named like so:

Track 1

Track 2

Track X

Track 10

Track 11

...

I wanted these tracks to play in proper order, but the player plays them in this order:

Track 1

Track 10

Track 11

Track 2

Track X

At first I thought I could fix this by renaming tracks to start with "Track 01" "Track 02" etc.. But that didn't work - the player would still play them in same order as before (and after some thinking I understood why).

So, I went another step and renamed tracks like so: "Track A" "Track B" "Track C"

I figured this would work... But what do you know, the way it played these tracks was:

Track A

Track J - which would've been track 10

Track K - track 11

Track B - track 2

Track C

etc...

Whaaat? Any idea how I can get this player to play the tracks in proper order?

Thanks!

system doesn't recognize drivers...

hello,

To my dismay however, whenever I plug my MP3 player into my PC, it sees it as an audio player with space taken up, but no viewable files. I noticed that on my last install of Vista my PC saw it as a "USA Mass Storage Drive" and not an "Audio Player" as it does now. I can still look at the pics/vids/docs in my MP3 player, I just need to get them of off there, lol. But the question is how...
I see nothing wrong with the board. I have triple-checked all connections. Any thoughts on why it won't fire up? Did my board fry after all? Maybe I have a faulty power switch? (I suppose I could jumper that connection and find out quick enough.) The CPU fan is connected so the auto-safety-shutoff shouldn't be causing any problems. The system has always been stable and doesn't have a lot of components to juice up so I doubt the Active PFC on the power supply is preventing startup... but I guess it could really be anything.

I am new to this forum and I just would like some of your opinions about my next computer build.

I am in the middle of getting all the parts together for a new PC. I use it for gaming, web surfing, video stuff, etc. The parts I have so far are as follows:

case: COOLER MASTER COSMOS

CPU: intel core I7 920

RAM: 6GB OCZ Plat.

DVD RW: SAMSUNG 20X w/ lightscribe

It is not much, but it is a start. What I am asking mainly is I am not sure where to go on the video cards. I would like an SLI/Crossfire setup, but which does everyone like as far as bang for the buck? I am thinking about 2x 4850 or 4870's

I am going to order the HX series 850 Watt power supply by corsair and I am using 2x 36gb 10k rpm raptors in RAID, I like them so I am going to get 2X 150GB velociraptors this time.

My rig now is a P4 2.4 that I run at under 3.0. I am not going to overclock this one that much, but maybe a bit. So that is my story, let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,

Mike

Everything worked fine at first (simply browsing the net, etc... basic stuff) until 4 days later we tried to play Unreal Tournement and within the first 30seconds in-game the computer simply powered off - this was reproducible on-demand... This also started occuring sometimes when watching shows (either AVI or streamed on the web)...

The only way to get the computer to power on again is to flip the switch in the back (on the Power Supply), wait 30-45 seconds, switch it back, and then power on the PC... Then everything works fine until the next time.

Obvisouly my first reaction was "defective power supply", so I returned it and replaced it with another one (same model) - first thing I did was test playing Unreal Tournement and movies and it worked fine for the first 3-4 days ... now yesturday while streaming sosme TV shows it happened again ...

That's pretty much the entire story ... my question ... how do I troubleshoot the issue?
- Is this a video card issue (only occurs when playing games or watching movies)?
- Is it a power supply issue (too strong? not compatible? sucks because no more return)
... RAM ... Mobo ...? did I just get unlucky?

Is there something I can install, some kind of monitoring software? Something that can help indicate where the issue lies ... Given that this is intermittent I can't just start removing hardware piece-by-piece...

Plan on the following:

Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz

Asus P6T, Intel X58
(http://www.raja.tw/Products/Asus-P6T-Intel-X58-S1366-PCI-E-20-(x16)-Triple-DDR3-2000(OC)-SATA-3Gb-s-SATA-RAID-ATX)

6GB Corsair XMS3 RAM 1600MHz (considered stepping it up to 12Gb total)

Western Digital 150Gb Velociraptor - just for the operating system and some frequently used programs/games

The rest of the parts that can be salvaged from my old machine:
XFX GTX 280
Soundblaster Fatal1ty
Two 1Tb Samsung Spinpoint HDDs
Tagan BZ Series 1100W PSU
DVD/CD drive

Now the CPU cooler is a concern. I plan to overclock the CPU from the stock 2.66Ghz to 3.6 - perhaps pushing it a little further to say 3.8Ghz. My current computer uses a Thermaltake Bigwater SE liquid cooling system (http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/waterse/), although since the pump died it now uses a Thermaltake P500 pump. I was considering buying either a new CPU waterblock or conversion kit in order to use this watercooling system for the i7. However since it's an entry level water cooler, am I right in assuming at overclocked speeds it may not be able to handle the heat?

The other solution that caught my eye was the Vigor Monsoon III LT (http://www.vigorgaming.com/components/cmp_monsooniiilite_intel.html). So the question really is, is it worth trying to convert the LCS for the i7, or just buy the air cooler?

Any advice on the other components would also be appreciated. :)

Need cpu fan replacement for T5048

My cpu fan is fried. Have tried finding replacement cpu fan for it. The problem is P4 screws hold the fan/heatskink and is 4-pin connector. All I am finding have retention clips and/ or 3-pin connectors. Any suggestions? Have already tried newegg and don't see anything that might fit it. Have even tried the eMachines site and the fan they show to replace has retention clips have already tried that and it won't fit the holes. Any help would be appreciated.

Greatly appreciate some advice on my new purchase. change things if needed. My main concern is matching up an appropriate
motherboard with the processor. This is a very heavy rig for me and I
don't want to plop down the doe if there is compatibility issues.

Does this motherboard match up well with the latest AMD chip (Phenom X4
9850 Black Edition Quad-Core)? See any issues with this build?
