Maybe 2014 will be the year of affordable, off-contract smartphones. If not, it won't be for a lack of trying from Motorola, which just announced that its unlocked Moto X (see our review) is now $399.99 going forward. Anyone and everyone can snag an off-contract Moto X for the newly reduced price, regardless of wireless carrier and whether or not you're eligible for an upgrade.

"Today several wireless carriers offer good month-to-month or prepaid service plans that cost much less than the contract plans that come with subsidized devices. Combine one of those plans with our new $399 everyday pricing and you could save hundreds of dollars over two years while keeping the freedom to change service providers when you feel like it. We can even help you finance your purchase so you pay monthly for your contract-free Moto X," Motorola said in a blog post.

The exceptions to the new price are the Moto X with bamboo back and the Developer Edition, which cost $500 and $450, respectively. Alternately, you can still snag a Moto X on-contract for $100 with a two-year service agreement.

Motorola's Moto X sports a 4.7-inch HD display (1280x720), 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 2MP front-facing camera, 10MP rear-facing camera, micro USB 2.0 port, 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and a few other odds an ends. It also now comes with Android 4.4 KitKat.

I don't know... I can't see paying $400 for any phone just because it's unlocked, when you can get full 7 and 8-inch tablets for much less.
