GameStop had predicted that the impending launch of Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 consoles would represent the biggest console launches in history, and so far the numbers have backed that up. Both companies raced to over 1 million unit sales in the first 24 hours, and at Walmart and Target, the Xbox One was the top selling console on Black Friday. Not to be outdone, Sony today announced that it has sold 2.1 million PS4 consoles around the globe so far.

"In what is shaping up to be a historic year for gamers, I’m delighted to share an important new milestone with you. PS4’s North American debut on November 15th was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than one million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours," Sony stated in a blog post. "Now, with PS4’s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold."

As somewhat expected, finding a PlayStation 4 in stock is not always easy. Sony chief Andrew House acknowledged as much, saying that demand is "incredibly strong" to the point where it's overwhelming supply. That's nothing new when it comes to home console launches, and in time, things will even out.

The PS4 will launch in even more countries this month before hitting Japan on February 22, 2014.

Well good luck to sony they have been in the crapper for a long time. Its great for competition. I myself and not a fan of playstation after my PS3 died twice, their network got hacked a number of times and their dam crappy interface I moved to xbox.

With the black Friday sales even the Xbox 360 out sold the PS4 and PS3 combined, so well see how it all pans out over the next 6 months.

Poor Wii U, why can't you do this? Maybe if you did, there would be more than 1k concurrent COD players and I could actually find a match...

I wonder how many of those "hardware failures" were people unplugging the console while it was in standby?
