If ever you wondered whether or not podcasts were truly popular, get this. Apple this week revealed that its iTunes Store topped 1 billion podcast subscriptions, served up across 250,000 unique podcasts in over 100 languages. Over 8 million episodes have been published so far in the iTunes Store.

"From comedy to hard news to sports to innovative educational content an so much more, podcasting has transformed the global media landscape," Apple said.

It's a pretty remarkable feat when you stop and think about it, and it also underscores Apple's influence on current culture. To wit, the word "podcast" was derived, in part, from Apple's iPod, the latter of which Apple invented (and the former it did not).

To celebrate the milestone, Apple is highlighting some of the most popular podcasts of all time.

Not that i actually listen to podcast my self but apples repertoire of podcast has always been superb. I hope google integrates a good podcast player into another app to replace google reader at some point.
