"...our board has authorized us to explore strategic alternatives for PSG. We intend to evaluate a range of options that may include, among others, a separation of PSG from HP through a spinoff or other transaction... We anticipate that we will take 12 to 18 months to complete this process."
This definitely could get interesting for Dell. I think it was a very smart move actually. You can continue to bleed like some of the others in this space, or re-group and evolve.

I hope this portends good things for Alienware too, so they can truly offer products with little/no Dell DNA.
Poor Adamo... such high hopes..
This is risky for Mr Dell however no matter what the guy is set for life he won't ever have to worry where his next meal is coming from. That being known he cares more about the company he started than just further fattening his pockets. So he didn't want his company Dell disappearing from the mainstream only to be compared to companies like Packard Bell 20 years from now... His name is on it afterall and if he can keep his company going beyond him in essence he achieves immortality lol. Go on and save your name Michael.
Haha! I don't know about "immortality" but I think the essence of your observation here is sound. Michael Dell built something with his own blood, sweat and tears. He sees great market changes that dictate change, some of which might be virtually monumental versus the vision he first embarked with. So what do you do? You take control of your own destiny. Win, lose or draw - at least this way, pressures from Wall Street and other external forces don't affect your decision-making and direction. Dell is a private company now. Dell does what Dell needs to survive and thrive.
I like that. I like that a lot.
Michael Dell had a dream many years ago and it seems like the dream aint over yet. This time around he has a better bank account to start with. I am typing this on a Dell system running on a Dell server and making gasoline on a Dell system also.
Good Luck
